Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation Annual Charity Golf Day 2026

Now in its 16th year, the Annual Charity Golf Day for the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation was held on the green at Yarra Yarra Golf Club, with 82 players on the day.

This year’s participants included Chisholm Institute staff, local businesses and sponsors to the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation, with 21 teams participating in a competitive Ambrose-style round over 18 holes. Games included a hole-in-one chance to win a Mercedes-Benz, sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Waverley, Longest Drive Pro with Golf Pro Steffan Scutti and Nearest Pin.

Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation’s Executive Officer, Farrah Buckland, says the Annual Charity Golf Day is the foundation’s major fundraising event of the year.

“It also helps raise funds for a great cause, for student scholarships.”

The day concluded with a two-course dinner with 95 guests in attendance. Special guest speakers for the evening were scholarship recipients Angel, Izzy and Kyle, who shared their experience of being awarded a scholarship, and the impact it has made in their lives.

Auctioneer John Shore hosted the live auction at the dinner, raising funds for the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation.

Congratulations to the winners of the event for 2026: Michael Bunn, Tony Valena, Simon Richards and Stephen Mitchell.

The next Annual Charity Golf Day will be held on 15 March, 2027 at Yarra Yarra Golf Club.

Turning industry experience into a teaching career

Across Victoria, skilled workers are in high demand – particularly in the trades. As industries look to build a strong pipeline of talent, there is also a need for qualified trainers and assessors with real-world experience to prepare students with the skills employers need.

For experienced professionals, this creates a meaningful opportunity: to stay connected to their trade while helping shape its future. With a recognised qualification like the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122), your expertise can become the foundation for a rewarding career in vocational education.

At Chisholm, many of our trainers began their careers on job sites, in workshops or running their own businesses. Here, four of our trades teachers share how they made the move from industry into TAFE teaching – and why it’s been a rewarding next step.

Bec Newman: Electrical

At 17, Bec began her apprenticeship with her family’s electrical business, and hasn’t looked back. At the time, there were no other women at trade school or on her worksites. She says she’s grateful her dad supported her decision to pursue a trade.

“As a female on a job site 20 years ago, there was an element of having to prove yourself. It wasn’t a great culture for females in trades at that time,” Bec says. “Only once other tradies recognised that I was there to do a job just like they were – and that I was very capable – that’s when I was accepted as just another tradesperson.”

After many years working as a qualified electrician, Bec saw an opportunity to move into TAFE teaching. As a mum of three, she was looking for greater job security and improved work-life balance – without losing her connection to the electrical industry.

She began teaching apprentices at Chisholm and has since progressed into a management role. Bec says her favourite part of the job is sharing her knowledge while staying connected to the trade.

“It’s so good to see females taking up trade apprenticeships. They are just as capable as anyone else to work in a trade.”

Adam Laxton: Building and Construction

After 25 years working as a qualified carpenter in the building industry, Adam was ready for a change. Tired of chasing builders and clients for payments, and with a young family, he was looking for better work-life balance.

A friend suggested he would make a great carpentry teacher. “I made a few calls and was lucky enough to get an opportunity at Chisholm,” Adam says.

Through this opportunity, Adam was supported to complete his training and assessment qualification, giving him the foundation to teach. He says that while he knew his trade, teaching was a new challenge.

“I needed to learn how to teach – how to use IT systems to support my teaching and understand that it takes effort. It doesn’t just happen; you have to learn new skills,” he explains. “Chisholm taught me to become a trade teacher. I got support throughout the Certificate IV and when I first started teaching apprentices in the workshops.”

Now working as the manager of building and construction courses at Chisholm, Adam says the most rewarding part of the job is seeing students learn and succeed.

“I love passing on new skills and ideas to future tradies. The best part is that lightbulb moment – when students achieve something they didn’t think they could.”

Fabian Campbell: Electrical

After running his own electrical contracting business since 2010, Fabian was ready for something new. “I was at a point in my career where I was looking for a change and a new challenge,” he says.

That shift led him to teaching at Chisholm, where he completed the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and transitioned into the classroom. Coming from industry, Fabian says the qualification helped him develop skills he didn’t previously have.

“As a contractor you just get in, get the job done, and explain things on the fly. But the Cert IV taught me how to break things down properly, make the learning gradual, and support students who all learn differently. That’s felt like a big win.”

Now teaching pre-apprenticeship students, Fabian says the most rewarding part of the role is seeing students grow in confidence and engage with the trade. “I enjoy empowering students. I like seeing them engaging with the trade I continue to enjoy and building confidence as they progress.”

He also focuses on creating a supportive classroom environment where students can learn from each other. “I encourage them to be a team and support one another throughout the course. I consider this to be a skill in itself – and seeing them walk in with a smile makes my day.”

Having grown up in Dandenong, Fabian says it’s especially meaningful to now be teaching in the same community.

“The class I teach is so diverse, and I love the challenge of meeting those needs by building an engaging and positive environment.”

David McNamara: Plumbing

David’s pathway into teaching began with his own experience as a student. In 2011, he commenced a pre-apprenticeship course in plumbing. As part of the course, he completed a work placement, leading to an apprenticeship, and then pursued a successful career in the plumbing industry.

By the end of 2023, David began considering a career change, and a conversation with a friend working in TAFE sparked his interest in education. That chat led him to reach out to Chisholm. “They advised that completing the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment would qualify me to teach. But, with a young family, I found it challenging to commit to the course at that time.”

David stayed in contact with Chisholm, who later offered him a teaching position where he could earn his training qualifications on the job. This opportunity reinforced that Chisholm was the right place to support his transition into teaching. With the help of his trainers and colleagues, David began building the skills and confidence to step into the classroom.

“The opportunity to observe and shadow experienced educators within the plumbing department was incredibly valuable and instrumental in my development,” he says.

Now teaching, David says the experience has transformed his confidence and career direction.

“Being able to work closely with students, help them build those essential skills, and support them in becoming job‑ready is incredibly rewarding.”

New Digital, AI, and Technology Centre of Excellence

Australia is at a turning point. As technology reshapes industries and artificial intelligence (AI) becomes a cornerstone of economic growth, the demand for digital skills has never been greater. By 2030, the nation needs 1.2 million tech workers to remain competitive on the global stage. Yet, projections show a shortfall of up to 370,000 digital roles by 2026.¹

To meet this challenge head-on, Chisholm Institute has been chosen to lead the country’s Digital, AI, and Technology Centre of Excellence – a bold initiative under the National Skills Agreement that will transform how Australians learn, work and innovate.

A national response to a national challenge

The Centre of Excellence, based at Chisholm’s state-of-the-art Frankston campus, is more than a training hub. It’s a catalyst for change – a place where education, industry and government converge to build Australia’s sovereign capability in digital and technology skills.

Backed by a joint investment from the Commonwealth and Victorian Governments, the Centre will:

Deliver cutting-edge simulation labs for applied learning in AI, big data, cybersecurity and emerging technologies.
Establish a national network of satellite campuses within leading Australian businesses and tech start-ups, creating real-world learning environments.
Expand higher apprenticeships and traineeships, offering earn-and-learn pathways into digital careers.
Launch a nationwide mentoring program and career readiness resources to support students from all backgrounds.
Drive applied research to keep pace with rapid technological change and inform best practice across the TAFE sector.

Why this matters for all of Australia.

Digital skills are no longer optional, they’re essential. From healthcare and advanced manufacturing to finance and defence, every sector is being reshaped by technology. Yet, research shows that 95% of the Australian workforce will need some level of digital reskilling in the coming years.²

The new national Centre of Excellence will help close this gap by creating inclusive pathways for learners of all backgrounds, including women, First Nations peoples and regional communities. It will also foster collaboration through a nationwide TAFE community of practice, ensuring that best practice in digital education is shared across the country.

The Centre of Excellence will begin operations in 2026, with early priorities to include:

Delivering a TAFE teacher training program to uplift teaching capability nationwide.
Establishing satellite campuses in partnership with global digital companies.

These initiatives will lead national direction in AI and digital innovation, while creating opportunities for thousands of Australians to upskill and thrive in a rapidly evolving economy.

Real skills, real confidence: the benefits of hands-on learning

Scholarships provide more than immediate relief — they create opportunity

It was more than 150 years ago that Caroline Chisholm made her mark on Australia, helping people to find housing and jobs.

Today, in the tradition of the famous philanthropist, the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation helps those facing financial hardship to cover their course fees at Chisholm. The charity supports current and future students who may otherwise be unable to access study.

Some recipients of scholarships from the foundation have shared their stories.

Red

For Red, receiving a scholarship has been life‑changing. As a single mother who has courageously escaped domestic violence, the opportunity to access financial support has helped her regain confidence, rediscover her strengths, and take meaningful steps toward the future she is working so hard to create.

After escaping domestic violence and raising her son on her own, Red found herself isolated and without a support network. Managing the financial demands of study while caring for her child felt overwhelming. With English as her third language, Red also faced additional challenges, feeling she lacked the foundational language skills needed to structure her writing and communicate confidently and effectively.

With support from Chisholm’s Reconnect Program, Red was referred to the Certificate III in General Education to strengthen her English skills and rebuild her confidence. For the first time, she found a course that felt manageable and a learning environment where she felt genuinely supported. Receiving the scholarship significantly eased financial pressures and helped smooth her transition back into education.

Receiving the scholarship has helped Red rebuild her confidence by bringing clarity to areas of study that once felt overwhelming. Strengthening her English skills is a vital step toward achieving her long‑term goal of completing a Bachelor of Arts and pursuing a career as an art teacher. As she envisions her future in education, Red hopes to create a learning environment grounded in comfort, understanding, and safety for students from all backgrounds—particularly those navigating challenges similar to her own.

To the donors who make the scholarship possible, Red says they provide “a light in someone’s dark days.” As a single parent, Red feels the impact deeply. Red is deeply grateful to the Foundation for helping her regain hope, explore her potential, and work toward the life she wants.

Rachael’s story: A Path to Meaningful Change

For Rachael, receiving a scholarship from the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation has been life‑changing. After years of feeling unfulfilled in her accounting career, financial support gave her the confidence to pursue a path grounded in human connection, care, and community—opening the door to a career that feels truly meaningful and aligned with who she is.

After completing a Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping, Rachael began her working life in accounting. Although she became established and progressed in her role, the work did not provide the sense of purpose she was seeking. As someone who thrives on connection and interaction with others, Rachael felt increasingly disconnected from her day‑to‑day work. While she knew she wanted a career focused on helping people, the financial pressure of returning to study made the possibility of change feel out of reach.

Being awarded a scholarship from the Foundation changed everything. For the first time, Rachael could genuinely consider a new direction for her future. The scholarship eased the financial strain and gave her the confidence to take a chance on a career she had never previously imagined. Rachael enrolled in a Certificate III in Individual Support—a course that opened the door to new possibilities and helped her uncover a passion she didn’t know she had.

How a scholarship helped two students re-engage with education

It was more than 150 years ago that Caroline Chisholm made her mark on Australia, helping people to find housing and jobs.

Some recipients of scholarships from the foundation have shared their stories.

Natasha

When art-lover Natasha Brocklesby finished Year 12, she knew she wanted to study a visual art course at Chisholm.

But Natasha was unable to afford the course fees, so she took a gap year instead.

When she eventually applied for the Certificate IV in Visual Arts at Chisholm the following year, a staff member told her about the foundation and she was able to successfully apply for a scholarship.

She loved the course, which she has since completed, and has now started the Diploma of Visual Arts (Illustration) receiving assistance from the foundation once again.

“I’m so grateful or I wouldn’t be able to do this. I don’t have any help.”

Natasha

With a talent for creating characters and designs, Natasha hopes to find work in concept design for film, TV or book covers. “I’ve done a few commissions privately,” she says.

The dedicated student has a six hour return trip via public transport to study at the Frankston campus, but she says it’s worth it. “I wanted to do this so I’m willing to put in the time,” Natasha says.

Timore

Before arriving in Australia, Timore championed the cause of Education for others. Through the help of Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation, he has successfully completed Certificate II in Electrotechnology – and has his eyes set on his next qualification.

Prior to migrating to Australia, Timore volunteered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in a refugee camp, providing English and mathematics education to refugee children.

Timore worked closely with families who were initially unwilling to allow their daughters to attend school. By building strong relationships with the community, Timore helped convince these families to permit their daughters to receive an education. Initially, only a very small number were attending school; however, after the program was introduced, the number increased to 60 girls. As a result, the children became more engaged and interested in education, and parents began to recognise the importance and long‑term value of educating their daughters. The girls demonstrated exceptional talent and potential.

After settling in Australia locally, Timore enrolled in the Certificate III in English where he was asked about his future career goals. Researching employment opportunities, Timore identified electrotechnology as a high‑demand occupation that aligned with his strengths. He recognised that he possessed strong problem‑solving skills and had a genuine interest in technical work, which motivated him to pursue this pathway. As a result, Timore enrolled in the Certificate II in Electrotechnology.

After completing his qualification in Electrotechnology with the support of the Foundation, Timore is now focused on further developing his skills in technology. His long‑term aspiration is to study a Bachelor of Computer Science, continuing with a Diploma of Information Technology.

Microsoft Copilot Hackathon at Chisholm Institute

The challenge

As the VET sector faces increasingly complex challenges, Chisholm Institute sought to deepen its digital capability uplift by moving beyond foundational AI literacy into applied innovation. The question was: how can we empower staff to co-create practical, future-ready solutions using generative AI tools like Microsoft Copilot, while addressing real-world problems in education and operations?

About the event

In November 2025, Chisholm hosted its first-ever two-day Microsoft Copilot Hackathon, supported by the Microsoft team. Six cross-functional teams – comprising educators, learning designers, IT specialists, and professional staff – came together to tackle “VET Sector Wicked Problems” through design thinking and AI-driven solutions.

Preparation included lunchbox sessions on Design Thinking and presentation skills, equipping participants to ideate effectively and pitch with confidence. The event featured keynote addresses from leaders including Andrew Fuller, who explored the accelerating pace of technological change and its implications for education, and interactive sessions led by Microsoft experts on Copilot Studio, prompting best practices, and agent design.

Day one focused on problem framing and ideation, while Day two was dedicated to refining concepts, building prototypes, and delivering pitches to a judging panel. Teams infused creativity into the experience by crafting team names, avatars, and even anthems – setting a vibrant tone for collaboration and innovation.

The impact

The Hackathon sparked a wave of creativity and confidence among participants. Teams developed actionable solutions leveraging Copilot agents to streamline workflows, reduce administrative burden, and enhance learner engagement. Examples included simplified and streamlined validation processes, improved induction processes, and a capability mapper leading to capability uplift and anticipated educator retention.

Feedback highlighted the event’s transformative effect:

I left the event with a develop agent capable of locating benchmark documents, analysing assessment evidence patterns, and producing structured draft validation summaries, without replacing the judgement required by trainers and assessors. The judging panel assessed pitches on Innovation, Impact, Feasibility, Solution Excellence, and Presentation, ultimately recognising two standout teams: The Green Matrix, who tackled educator capability mapping,and The Bug Free Bandits, who streamlined the validation process.

Beyond the competition, the Hackathon reinforced Chisholm’s commitment to sector leadership in digital innovation, fostering a culture of experimentation and collaboration that will underpin future initiatives.

As the vocational education and training (VET) sector rapidly evolves, Chisholm recognised the urgent need to uplift digital capability across its workforce. With generative AI tools like Microsoft Copilot reshaping how educators and staff work, the challenge was clear: how can we empower our people to confidently and ethically integrate AI into their daily practice?

About the event

On September 19, 2025, we hosted a transformative Microsoft Copilot Prompt-a-thon, facilitated by Rishona Elijah, an accredited Microsoft trainer. The event brought together 50 educators and professional staff from teaching, learning design, IT, quality, and professional services. Participants explored prompting fundamentals, agent design, and Microsoft's Responsible AI Standards in a hands-on, high-impact learning environment.

The impact

The Prompt-a-thon had a profound impact on participants, sparking curiosity, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose in exploring the potential of generative AI. Staff from diverse roles, including teaching, learning design, IT, and quality, engaged deeply with Microsoft Copilot. Through the event, they discovered how it could streamline their workflows, enhance creativity, and support student outcomes.

Participants reported a significant increase in their digital confidence, with many expressing excitement about applying prompting techniques in their day-to-day work and further exploring agent design. The event also fostered a strong sense of community and collaboration, as staff shared ideas, tested prompts, and supported one another in real time.

Importantly, the Prompt-a-thon demonstrated our leadership in digital innovation, reinforcing our strategic commitment to building a future-ready workforce. Lessons learnt

AI is most effective when paired with human creativity and context: The event demonstrated that Copilot excels when guided by human insight. This highlights the need for our educators and staff to see AI not as a replacement, but as a collaborative partner that enhances their expertise and judgement.
Iteration and experimentation are key to unlocking Copilot’s full potential: Staff who experimented with different prompt styles and agent designs achieved the most impactful outcomes. This supports a culture of innovation and continuous learning, where trial and error are embraced as part of the process.
Staff are eager to learn and apply AI when given the right tools and support: The high level of engagement and enthusiasm confirmed that, with the right scaffolding, staff are ready to embrace AI. This validates our investment in digital capability uplift and highlights the importance of ongoing, structured support.

Challenges faced

Translating AI potential into role-specific practice: While enthusiasm was high, some participants expressed initial uncertainty about how to apply AI in their specific roles. This highlights the importance of contextualising AI use cases across diverse educational and operational functions to ensure relevance and uptake.
Ensuring equitable access and sustained support: As we scale our AI initiatives, we must ensure that all staff, regardless of role, digital confidence, or location, can participate meaningfully in the transformation journey. Equitable access to tools, time for experimentation, and ongoing support will be critical to long-term success.

Next steps

The Prompt-a-thon is just the beginning. We will continue our AI journey with a 2-day Hackathon with Microsoft in November 2025, integration of Copilot into a Digital Readiness Plan, and ongoing professional development through the Professional Educator College.

Every great community starts with its teachers and early childhood educators. They help children learn, grow and develop the skills they’ll carry through life – shaping not only their futures, but the strength of our society. But right now, Australia is facing a major shortage of early childhood professionals. And workforce studies show that tens of thousands of new workers will be needed in the coming years to meet demand.

It’s clear that more needs to be done to strengthen and support the early childhood workforce. The good news is that governments and industry are investing in solutions. For people thinking about a new career, this creates clear pathways into a stable and rewarding field.

To get a closer look at the sector and where the opportunities lie, we spoke to Siobhan Siedlecki, State Lead Early Childhood Trainee Project at Chisholm.

The state of play: where the workforce stands now

Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) is one of Australia’s biggest and fastest-growing sectors. There are already more than 260,000 educators nationwide, yet demand continues to outpace supply. In Victoria, population growth and expanded kindergarten programs are adding extra pressure, leaving many services struggling to find qualified staff.

How big is the gap?

Jobs and Skills Australia’s ECEC Workforce Capacity Study (2024) shows Australia currently needs around 21,000 more qualified early childhood educators and teachers to meet existing demand and create more sustainable workloads. And we’ll need another 36,000 in the coming years.

What’s behind the shortage?

Several factors contribute to the gap between supply and demand in ECEC:

Increased access: Programs like Best Start, Best Life are giving all three- and four-year-olds access to kindergarten. This has increased the number of children in care, creating a need for thousands of new workers.
Keeping staff: Low pay, heavy workloads, and few opportunities for promotion have made it hard to keep people in the job.
Slow entry: It takes time to complete early childhood qualifications, so entry into the workforce can be a long process.
Location issues: Regional areas and certain suburbs have the worst shortages. In these areas, there’s not only a shortage of qualified workers, but also a lack of local early childhood services and jobs.

Government moves: what’s being done to fix it

Governments at both state and federal levels have launched major initiatives to grow and support the workforce:

Workforce packages: Programs providing training, mentoring, and career development support.
Wage increases: A staged 15% pay rise for educators and teachers designed to attract and keep staff.
Incentives and scholarships: State governments, including Victoria, offering financial support for students to gain their qualifications.
Migration pathways: Early childhood teaching roles remain on skilled occupation lists, creating pathways for qualified migrants.

Siobhan says professional development is crucial. “Funding for professional development makes a big difference. It helps educators feel more confident and supported to stay in the industry.”

Industry moves: solutions taking shape

Beyond government programs, the early childhood sector is taking its own steps to fill the gap and keep skilled educators in the workforce:

Training and upskilling: New flexible qualification models to shorten the time to the workforce.
Retention strategies: Wage increases, mentoring and professional development funding.
Industry partnerships: Providers and services collaborating on placements, pathways, and workforce planning.

“Traineeships have been a game-changer. They allow people with transferable skills to step into the sector. With the right support, they’re more likely to complete and stay,” Siobhan says.

Gaining the permission to dream again

After 25 years in food science and technology, Ana felt a deep calling for change. With a growing interest in mental health and a desire to help others, she made the courageous decision to return to study. But as a mother of two, the financial burden was daunting.

Ana enrolled in a Certificate IV in Mental Health through Free TAFE, only to discover unexpected costs for materials and fees. Overwhelmed, Ana nearly gave up—believing she couldn’t afford to both study and support her family.

Kyle

Changing lives through education

When Kyle received a scholarship from the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation (CCEF), his life took a powerful turn toward hope and possibility.

After a tragic accident, Kyle dropped out of school in Year 11 and was left battling severe anxiety, unable to work or study. He felt lost, without direction or hope. But everything changed when he connected with the Reconnect team at Chisholm and found support from his friends and family. Slowly, Kyle began to dream again.

Determined to rebuild his future, Kyle enrolled in a Certificate III in General Education for Adults. Despite his eagerness, financial barriers stood in his way until he was referred to the CCEF and awarded a fully funded scholarship.

Chisholm Institute secures Australian Defence Force contract to deliver Hospitality training

In April 2025, Chisholm Institute signed a five-year contract with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to deliver hospitality training for Defence personnel.

The contract will deliver training to personnel across three services of Navy, Army and Air Force, completing qualifications in Hospitality and Commercial Cookery. Training packages include SIT30821 – Certificate III in Hospitality and SIT30622 – Certificate III in Commercial Cookery.

The first round of students undertaking Certificate III qualifications are due to graduate in November as part of a 20-week training program. Training will be delivered on campus at Frankston as well as at the Royal Australian Navy’s training base at HMAS Cerberus.

Under a hybrid service defence model, Chisholm will develop and deliver specialised training qualifications to meet the unique requirements for Defence, that will also provide Defence members with a nationally recognised qualification upon graduation.

Chisholm’s CEO Stephen Varty says, “We are proud to partner with the Australian Defence Force to deliver bespoke training that supports the development of a highly skilled and capable Defence workforce.”

Remembering the life and legacy of Virginia Simmons AO

Chisholm Institute joins the broader education community in honouring the extraordinary life and legacy of Virginia Simmons AO, a visionary leader whose impact on vocational education in Australia will be felt for generations.

Virginia’s career was defined by her unwavering commitment to educational equity, public-sector advocacy, and lifelong learning. As the longest-serving female CEO in Victorian TAFE history, she led both Chisholm Institute and Kangan Institute with distinction, transforming them into inclusive, future-focused institutions that empowered thousands of learners.

She served as CEO of Chisholm Institute for nine years, having been appointed Director and CEO in April 2001. Prior to that, she was Deputy Vice-Chancellor (TAFE) at Swinburne University of Technology for three and a half years, and Director of Kangan Batman Institute of TAFE for 11 years.

Virginia served on numerous economic and education boards, including the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority (VRQA) and International Training Australia (ITA), further shaping policy and practice at the highest levels.

A trailblazer in vocational education

Virginia was a pioneer in every sense of the word. She was the first woman appointed as Director of a TAFE institute, breaking barriers and setting new standards for leadership in the sector. Her work helped shape national policy, and she played a key role in major federal reviews, including the TAFE Tasmania review and the Australia Pacific Technical Colleges evaluation.

Virginia contributed to international education development across China, Africa, the Middle East, and the Pacific, helping build skills and industry growth in emerging economies. She worked with a wide range of international agencies including AusAID, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank, SEAMEO, and IDP Education Australia.

A champion for learners

At the heart of Virginia’s leadership was a deep belief in the power of education to change lives.

One of her proudest achievements was the establishment of the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation, which continues to support learners facing financial hardship. Her legacy lives on in every scholarship awarded and every student who finds their path through education.

A legacy of leadership and humanity

Virginia’s leadership style was marked by strategic vision, integrity, and compassion. She mentored countless professionals across the sector, many of whom now hold senior leadership roles. Her colleagues remember her as an inspiring mentor and a deeply principled leader.

In a career marked by distinction and dedication, Virginia Simmons AO received some of Australia’s highest honours for her contributions to education. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2010, recognising her national impact on vocational learning and leadership.

Her dedication to advancing opportunities for women in vocational education was formally recognised in 1995, when she received the inaugural Prime Minister's Training Award.

In 2008, she was awarded the Sir James Darling Medal for outstanding contribution to education, and in 2011, she was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women.

Honouring her legacy

To celebrate her enduring impact, Chisholm Institute established the Virginia Simmons Outstanding Contribution Award in 2024, recognising exceptional leadership and commitment to educational excellence within the vocational sector.

Virginia Simmons AO passed away peacefully on 16 September 2025. Her leadership left a lasting mark on Chisholm Institute and the broader vocational education community.

Reflecting on her legacy, Stephen Varty, Chief Executive Officer of Chisholm, said:

“Virginia was a force for good in education. Her legacy is not just in the institutions she led, but in the lives she changed and the leaders she inspired.”

Her vision and values continue to shape the work of Chisholm Institute today. We honour her memory by continuing the work she championed: creating inclusive, high-quality education that empowers every learner to thrive.

Enrolled nurse or registered nurse: what’s the difference?

Most of us have a general idea of what nurses do – looking after patients, of course.

As some of the most important people in our community, nurses impact the lives of people every day. But the nitty gritty of the different levels of nursing can be a bit of an unknown outside the health sector.

You may have heard the terms Registered Nurse (RN), Enrolled Nurse (EN), Division 1 or Division 2 and wondered about the difference between them. Or, you might have wondered which pathway to nursing would suit you best as you begin your own career.

We spoke to Chisholm Bachelor of Nursing coordinator Philippa Ashworth about the differences between the two nursing roles. She also shed light on the study and career pathways to choose from.

What is an enrolled nurse?

An EN is a nurse who has completed a diploma-level qualification, like our Diploma of Nursing.

The qualification allows you to work as an EN in a range of settings, including hospitals, aged care services and medical clinics. As an EN, you must always be supervised by an RN.

ENs are sometimes called Division 2 nurses. Their jobs involve implementing and monitoring patient care. They also administer medicines, comply with infection control, perform clinical assessments and contribute to planning care processes.

Once you've completed your relevant diploma, you can register with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as an Endorsed Enrolled Nurse.

What is a registered nurse?

An RN is a nurse with an undergraduate qualification, such as the Bachelor of Nursing.

RNs are able to work more independently and with more seniority than ENs. They can plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for patients, provide treatments and therapies such as medications, and monitor responses to treatment and care plans. Sometimes called Division 1 nurses, RNs can supervise the work of ENs and oversee other health care workers.

Philippa says the big difference between an EN and an RN is the scope of practice, and that RNs have the option to consider postgraduate study.

"As an EN, you're limited in some of the things you can do, whereas an RN can look at the management stream, education stream, and you can advance to postgraduate specialist studies."

Nursing courses and study pathways

The VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM)

VCE VM is a two-year program for year 11 and 12 students who prefer hands-on learning and don't need an ATAR. It helps to build real-world skills and prepares you for further study.

The VCE VM is a great way to get a feel for the nursing industry. It can also allow you to gain access to the Diploma of Nursing and qualify as an EN. From there, you can get industry experience and/or further your skills and qualifications.

Diploma of Nursing

The diploma of nursing is a comprehensive 18-month course developed to prepare ENs for the workforce.

Chisholm's Diploma of Nursing is delivered at our Frankston and Berwick campuses by clinically current educators. You'll learn in facilities that replicate real hospital environments for the latest job-ready skills. As a diploma graduate, you'll be qualified to register with AHPRA as an EN.

The diploma is also a Free TAFE course, meaning if you're eligible, you won't have to pay the tuition fees.*

Bachelor of Nursing

An EN can apply to undertake a further two years of study to become an RN through a Bachelor of Nursing.

At Chisholm, our Bachelor of Nursing (Enrolled Nurse Pathway) is delivered in partnership with Latrobe University. This unique program allows you to gain a Latrobe University degree but continue your education on campus with us.

Enrolled and registered nurse salaries

Enrolled nurse: The median income for ENs in Australia is $1,618 per week.

Registered nurse: The median income for RNs in Australia is $2,156 per week.

Philippa says nurses' wages depend on years of experience, level of responsibility and the shifts they work:

"Somebody on night duty will get a much bigger shift penalty loading," she says. "You also get allowances for working late in the day, weekends and public holidays."

Nursing career pathways

Both ENs and RNs can find themselves working in a variety of settings, including providing acute care in hospitals, working in aged care or mental health.

For ENs who want to increase the scope of what they can do, Philippa says becoming an RN can lead to a diverse career without ever leaving nursing. She has worn many hats throughout her own nursing career.

"I've taught at universities and I'm now coordinating an undergraduate course in nurse education," she says. "My career pathway has seen me work for Victoria Police as a nurse looking after prisoners at police stations. I've been a school nurse, done stints in intensive care, emergency departments, coronary care and theatres. I've even worked in a nursing agency allocating staff."

"The minute you have your Bachelor of Nursing under your belt, the world becomes an even bigger oyster and you find nurses aren't just restricted to hospitals," Philippa says. "You can chop and change, and there is the opportunity to move around in the field and try before you buy."

Chisholm tackles gender gap in manufacturing

The report, delivered in partnership with Women’s Health in the South East (WHISE) and the South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA), highlights the barriers that continue to prevent women from entering and staying in manufacturing careers.

Funded by the Victorian Government through its Women in Manufacturing and Energy initiative, the report draws on insights from student forums, gender impact assessments, and data on enrolment and retention. Its aim is to increase the number of women completing manufacturing apprenticeships and successfully transitioning into industry roles.

Although women make up nearly half of Australia’s workforce, they hold just 23% of roles in the manufacturing sector. They are also underrepresented in leadership and higher-paying positions, contributing to an average gender pay gap of 18.1% across the sector.

The report also highlights the broader economic implications of this imbalance. Currently, 65% of skilled roles in shortage are in male-dominated industries, where men make up more than 80% of the workforce. According to the report, increasing gender diversity in these areas could help ease labour shortages and strengthen the workforce overall.

Through evidence-based strategies, capacity building, and cultural change initiatives, it offers a scalable model for tackling gender inequality in traditionally male-dominated fields.

Powering local careers with high demand traineeships

The Mornington Peninsula's economy is booming. Over the past decade, the region has experienced steady growth across diverse industries, making it a place where careers and businesses can thrive.

To help build a strong pipeline of skilled local workers, Mornington Peninsula Shire designed a new traineeship program in collaboration with Chisholm as the delivery partner. Trainees joined full-time roles, gaining experience across council departments while studying for a Certificate III in Business.

Participants included school leavers, career changers, and those re-entering the workforce. For them, the traineeship offered flexible employment and practical training, plus a nationally recognised qualification delivered both on campus and online.

"I've grown so much during my time here," said trainee Sally Bassett. “I am more confident in my abilities and open to stepping outside my comfort zone.”

With guidance from professionals at the Shire, trainees developed workplace skills and grew their professional confidence across a range of business functions. The program also created pathways to further study, including the option to continue with a Certificate IV in Business.

"One of the key strengths of this program is its adaptability, allowing us to tailor the experience to best support our trainees' growth and career development," said Lucy Willis, the employment pathways lead at Mornington Peninsula Shire.

Lyn Brennan-Jesson, Mental Health and Counselling Teacher at Chisholm Institute, says supporting people with mental health challenges isn’t just vital – it can also lead to a stable and meaningful career.

“With the advent of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) across Victoria, more opportunities for support workers are emerging throughout the sector,” she says.

What’s it like working in mental health?

Chisholm Institute secures Australian Defence Force training contract

In January 2025, Chisholm Institute signed a three-year training contract with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to deliver dental and sterilisation training for Defence personnel.

The contract will deliver training to personnel across the three services of Navy, Army, Air Force, completing qualifications in dental and sterilisation techniques. Training packages include HLT35021 Certificate III Dental Assisting, HLT37015 Certificate III Sterilisation Services and HLT45021 Certificate IV Dental Assisting.

The first round of students undertaking Certificate III qualifications are due to graduate in May as part of a 20-week training program. Training will be delivered on campus at Frankston as well as at the Royal Australian Navy’s training base at HMAS Cerberus.

In its response to the requirements of the tender, Chisholm Institute has developed a purpose-built program to suit the needs of defence personnel training requirements.

Chisholm’s CEO, Stephen Varty said the Institute is proud to continue its work with the Australian Defence Force and to contribute to Australia’s sovereign capability by equipping Defence personnel with the skills they need to serve and protect the nation.

The contract further demonstrates Chisholm’s strong capability and track record in providing bespoke training programs for ADF personnel.

“This continued partnership with the Australian Defence Force is a strong endorsement to the expertise, quality and commitment of Chisholm staff, in the provision of essential training and skills development,” said Mr Varty.

Protecting yourself

We attend classes online, communicate with our friends on messaging apps, place online grocery orders and use our phones for banking and storing credit cards. The list goes on and on. All of this makes our lives easier, but it also makes us vulnerable to scammers, hackers and cyber criminals.

But, according to Chisholm Institute cyber security teacher Chris Freeman there is plenty we can do to keep ourselves safe in our increasingly digital world. He has shared some of the common threats to watch out for, and his tips to avoid them.

Phishing scams

We’ve all seen these common scams in one form or another, whether it’s a fake email which looks like it’s from a bank, or a text message which appears to be from a government department. It could even be a phone call offering you a deal that seems too good to be true. You may think you know what to look out for, but scammers change tactics all the time and use increasingly sophisticated tricks.

So, how can you recognise a phishing scam? Chris says to be wary of any messages asking you to verify your details or passwords or encouraging you to open links. “You might receive an email on a topical issue and be told to ‘click here’ for more information… or be asked to ‘click here to verify your location,” he says. According to Chris spelling or grammatical errors are often a sign a message doesn’t come from an official source and it’s also important to check the email address of the sender and make sure the links point to the website they say they will.

Chris says we all need to “stop and consider” every time we receive an unsolicited email or message. If you’re still in doubt phone the organisation involved to check if the email or message is legitimate. Or, log in via their website directly, not by clicking on any links.

Ransomware

Imagine switching on your computer one day and discovering you can’t access your files – they are literally being held to ransom and you can only regain access by paying a fee for an unlock code. This is the scary reality for those who are targeted by ransomware scams. “The malware usually gets into your computer because you clicked on a link in an email or on a web page,” Chris says. This is another very good reason to check links are legitimate before you click.

Data leakage

Just like water from a leaky pipe, confidential or sensitive information can sometimes spill out into the world. “A data leak is when sensitive data is accidentally exposed on the internet or lost on USBs or laptops,” Chris says. “Once it is out there its often very hard to delete.”

Just a simple error like choosing the wrong recipient when sending sensitive information via email can cause a leak. Sometimes it’s out of your hands and your personal information may be exposed by a company or organisation you have trusted.

How to stay safe

Here are Chris’ top tips to protect yourself online:

Be aware: “Before opening a suspicious email, consider who is sending it to you and what they’re asking you to do. Do not open attachments or click on links in unsolicited emails or messages. Reputable organisations including banks, government departments and large organisations like Amazon, PayPal, Google, Apple and Facebook, will never call or email you to verify your password or to update your personal information.”

Verify addresses: “If you’re unsure of where an email is from, double check by calling the organisation the suspicious email appears to be from, using contact details from a verified website or trusted source.”

Don’t give out personal information: “Don’t post photos of your home or photos of your kids wearing school uniform on public social media accounts.”

Know who you’re speaking to: “If a third-party has called you out of the blue, or offers you rewards, don’t trust them.”

Use a malware scanner: “Most modern computer operating systems have one installed already and it’s updated automatically. If you have an older operating system, upgrade as soon as possible.”

Choose strong passwords: “Use long and unique passwords on all your accounts, such as email, bank and social media accounts. Also, use two-factor authentication (2FA) on all essential services, as this way of 'double-checking' identity is stronger than a simple password.”

After leaving Australia Post in her forties, Laura enrolled in Chisholm's Diploma of Nursing under Free TAFE, was accepted into Ramsay Health's Undergraduate Cadetship Program and ultimately won the Ramsay's 2024 Nursing Cadet Student of the Year Award.

She gained valuable clinical experience in rehab, perinatal mental health and acute health through her training and placements at several hospitals. She was then offered a graduate role at Peninsula Private Hospital just a month after completing her cadetship.

Eddy shifted to a role helping those who need it most in his community.

Bronwyn embraced a fresh start and rebuilt her life with a bold career change.

Women reshaping trades on the Mornington Peninsula

With construction one of the biggest industries in the Mornington Peninsula, there's never been a better time for women to get on the tools. That's exactly what Shardai Hewett, Peninsula local and plumbing apprentice, is doing – and she encourages other women to do the same.

"Do what your heart says," Shardai said. "People say, 'You can't lift this' or 'You can't do that – you're a girl,' but I've always done it anyway. And now, no one says anything because they know I'm going to prove them wrong."

Shardai always knew she wanted to work in a trade. With a love for hands-on work and a father who owned a plumbing business, she jumped at the chance to start an apprenticeship. Now in her second year at Chisholm, she's making huge strides in her career.

But the journey hasn't been easy. In early 2024, her father had a stroke, and Shardai, her sister, and their mother had to step up and help keep the business running. Just two months after her father returned home, she faced another blow – an ovarian cancer diagnosis.

"I was off the tools for about four months. I was lucky the surgery was all I had to do," she said.

Through it all, she found support from her family, workmates and teachers at Chisholm.

"The teachers and boys at TAFE, all the boys at work – they're just like family to me," said Shardai. "I’ve nearly caught up. I've got one prac to go, and I was about six or seven behind."

Students like Shardai – driven, resilient, and determined – are proving that women belong in trade occupations and are reshaping the industry for the better.

"It makes me feel really proud of myself and know it means that I can do whatever I put my mind to."

The Commonwealth Prac Payment is designed to alleviate the financial pressures associated with unpaid placements. Program guidelines are currently being developed by the Department of Education in collaboration with education providers.

Who is eligible?

You may be eligible for the Commonwealth Prac Payment if you are:

A domestic Chisholm student enrolled in a Chisholm Bachelor of Nursing or Diploma of Nursing.
Completing a mandatory placement as part of your course.
Receiving a Centrelink payment or meeting the Government's "Need to work"

How do I apply?

You will need to gather your eligibility evidence, including citizenship, enrolment, placement dates, income, and log in to Your Career portal via MyGov to submit your application and await the assessment outcome.

Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation Annual Charity Golf Day

Now in its fifteenth year, this year’s event was held on the green at Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club, with a record number of attendees of 88 players on the day.

This year’s participants included Chisholm Institute staff, local businesses and sponsors to the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation with 22 teams participating in a competitive Ambrose style round over 18 holes.

Games included a hole-in-one chance to win a Mercedes Benz, sponsored by Mercedes Benz Waverley, Longest Drive Pro with Golf Pro Steffan Scutti and Nearest Pin.

Executive Officer of CCEF, Farrah Buckland says the Annual Charity Golf Day is the Foundation’s Major fundraising event of the year.

“The majority of the players come back year after year to enjoy a day of golf with colleagues and friends.”

“It also helps raise funds for a great cause, for student scholarships.”

The day concluded with a two-course dinner with 100 guests in attendance. Special guest speaker for the evening was Sam Sanchez, who at 65 years of age, returned to study at Chisholm Institute to commence his new career in Real Estate.

Auctioneer John Shore hosted the live auction at the dinner, raising funds for the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation.

Chisholm selected as Regional Education Institute

Chisholm Institute has been selected as the Regional Education Institute (REI) for the Asian Development Bank-funded Cambodia Skills for Future Economy Sector Development Program (SFESDP).

Chief Executive Officer Stephen Varty and Chief Commercial Officer Damien Van Eyk recently visited Phnom Penh as part of an Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) mission, engaging with the Ministry and some of the institutes that Chisholm Institute will be working with over the next five years.

In collaboration with Eductrade, SBK Research and Development and the Cambodian Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, this five-year, US$6.8 million initiative will uplift eight key Cambodian vocational institutes in Engineering and Information Technology.

As part of this contract, Chisholm Institute’s focus will be on strengthening employability for women and men, implementing competency-based, modular training programs in priority skills, upgrading training facilities and equipment and supporting broader skills development reform.

Chisholm Institute is honoured to be selected as the Regional Education Institute and looks forward to supporting the delivery of Cambodia’s development program.

6 tips for creating a winning cover letter

Do cover letters matter? According to Chisholm Skills and Jobs Centre Manager Clint Johnson, you should always assume they do.

“You never know who will be reviewing your application,” Clint says. “It could be someone who doesn’t care for cover letters too much, or it could be an employer that bases their entire decision on how readable that cover letter is.”

But what should you write in a cover letter? According to Clint, the quality depends on three things:

How well you understand the general purpose of cover letters.
How effectively you structure the letter.
How you format the information on the page.

Read on for Clint’s detailed advice on crafting the perfect cover letter.

What are cover letters for?

Clint says that in general terms, the purpose of a cover letter is to “engage the reader so they want to put your application in the ‘Yes’ pile and offer you an interview”.

But how exactly do you engage a potential employer? Clint says it’s important to explain why you’re a good fit for a particular role, rather than just listing your skills and experience. “Use the cover letter as an opportunity to show you understand the role you are applying for,” he says. “Avoid generic language.”

That means spending time researching the specifics of the job and writing a new cover letter for every role you apply for, not simply recycling a cover letter over and over.

Getting the structure right

Your letter should contain three main sections, according to Clint:

First, an introductory paragraph that identifies the relevant skills and values you have to offer. The keyword here is “relevant” – you should only list skills and values that can be applied to the role.
Second, include a middle section that has some proof of the skills you’ve listed in the first paragraph. This can include relevant qualifications, prior employment, and volunteering and work experience.
Third, a paragraph that explains why you believe you are the best person for the job. “This is your opportunity to make sure an employer knows you’re talking specifically to them, and that you haven’t sent the same cover letter out with a thousand applications,” Clint says. “It’s a really good time to identify the organisation’s values and mention them, or to identify a key project the company is working on that you would like to work on, too.”

The ideal length and look

Don’t make your cover letter too long or dense, Clint says it’s better to convey the information as succinctly as possible.

“The reader probably doesn’t want to read great slabs of text,” he says. “We wouldn’t recommend anything more than one page.”

Finally, take a moment to look over your cover letter and make sure the font types and size match those on your résumé. “That’s all about improving your personal branding and creating a sense of consistency. It shows that you pay attention to details.”

5 impressive questions to ask in a job interview

You've nailed your resume, aced the cover letter and secured an interview. Now, you're ready to meet an interview panel and find out all you need to know about the job.

An interview is also where your potential employer will want to know more about you and the benefits you can bring to the business.

The interview panel is sure to have plenty of questions, but how can you persuade them you're the right fit for the job? According to Andrea O'Bryan, who oversees Chisholm Skills and Job Centre, the answer lies in not just answering the questions they have for you but also the questions you ask them. 

1. Ask about the team 

"Every interview panel is looking to have a good experience meeting you and hoping you'll be the solution to their talent issue," says Andrea.

Her first tip is to ask about the team you'll be working with. "By doing this, you are showing that you're already in the mindset of working with the team," she says. "It shows enthusiasm, and it shows you believe that people are important to an organisation."

The response you get can also offer insight into the workplace culture. "It's a good way to understand how much respect is paid to the people in the team," Andrea adds. 

2. Ask about what you need to do 

A key issue with many job descriptions is they don't clearly communicate what the day-to-day job involves. "Sometimes, the actual role can be vastly different from the role you have applied for," Andrea says.

The interview is the perfect time to pinpoint what will be expected of you in the role. "When you're asking, 'What is the most important deliverable in the first six months?' it also gives you an understanding of what most of your day will be like, and of all the duties and tasks." 

3. Ask about your boss 

Everyone wants to know what their potential boss is really like. However, rather than directly asking about their management style, Andrea recommends asking open-ended questions like 'How does this position I'm applying for support your role?' "This gives you a good understanding of what your potential leader will be like. It is another window to get a feel for the culture." 

4. Ask for clarification 

For many, the interview process can be daunting. If you reach a moment of uncertainty, Andrea recommends addressing this immediately. "If you don't understand a question you've been asked during the interview process, don't be afraid to say, 'Could you please clarify?'" she advises.

Likewise, if you feel like you've wandered off-track, Andrea suggests taking a direct approach. "If you think you're rambling, say, 'Oh gosh, I think I've rambled a bit – is that what you're looking for?'" 

5. Ask if they need more information

It's a question best saved to last – and potentially, one that can land you the job. "Right at the end, when things are warm and personable, there's a chance to ask, 'Do you have any other questions about my skills or experience?'," says Andrea. 

This provides an opportunity for a panel to address any potential gaps in a candidate's skills or expertise and a chance for the candidate to answer any doubts. However, Andrea warns this strategy isn't for everyone: "You need to answer any questions confidently." 

5 simple steps to write your first resume

When you’re searching or applying for your first job, putting together your resume can be daunting. You might find yourself staring at a blank document and wondering how on earth you will fill it.

But don’t worry, Chisholm Institute Skills and Jobs Centre Manager Clint Johnson has some tips to help you put together an impressive resume that will help you launch your working life.

Here’s how to get your resume right for your first job:

Identify the purpose of your resume

Ultimately, you want your resume to communicate to employers who you are and why you will make a great employee.

Usually, this involves listing your name and contact details, education, work and volunteering experience and references.

But different types of employers will be looking for employees with different skills, so it’s a good idea to decide the purpose of your resume first before you get started. This will influence which experiences and skills you include.

“If you’re going for a work placement in a hospital, that’s a totally different skill set compared to applying for your first job at the fish and chip shop to get cash to keep studying,” Clint says.

“For your health work you might focus on your hygiene standards, understanding of regulations, assignments or projects you’ve done at school.

“For a fish and chip shop you would highlight any customer service you’ve done, such as if you’ve helped out in the canteen at your sports club.”

Find a resume template

According to Clint, there’s no better place to start than with a template. He recommends finding one on the Australian Government’s My Future website, which has a range of template options you can download based on where you’re at in your career, whether you’re still at school or looking for a graduate role.

“You can choose a strong template whether you’re a graduate, or an early school leaver, or if you need a work placement,” he says.

Identify your relevant skills and life experience

You may not have had a job before, but you still might have lots of great skills and experiences that employers will value.

The key is identifying which of your skills and experiences match what you need for the job you want. You’ll need to emphasise these skills in your cover letter as well.

“If you’re going for a caring role, you might want to highlight caring you’ve done within your family or babysitting jobs or peer support at high school,” Clint says.

“From a trade perspective, it’s not just any labouring experience or your physical skills, employers would also be looking for teamwork skills.

“If you’ve been in a footy team or sporting club, you could highlight how you did the score work or were a captain.”

If you feel you need some more experience to add to your resume, you could start to look around for opportunities to gain experience in your community.

“Initiative is a really great skill, and if you can use your initiative to help others, it will look great on your resume,” Clint says.

Look for opportunities to help or join in wherever you can, whether that’s in a community group, club or by taking part in school activities.

Choose your referees

It’s a good idea to have one or two referees ready to provide a reference that speaks to your experience and capabilities. While it is not necessary to list them on your resume, they will be required by any prospective employer later in the recruitment process.

It’s generally a good idea to include one or two referees on your resume, although they are usually not contacted by employers until later in the recruitment process.

Clint says these should be people who are able to talk about your skills and experience.

“It might be a teacher you get along well with, someone from the sporting club you’re part of or a friend who owns a business you’ve helped at,” he says.

“Sometimes people don’t realise when they’re helping out that they’re building networks.”

Always check with the referee first to make sure they’re happy to be contacted by employers. Let them know about the type of jobs you’re applying for and provide them with a copy of your resume so they’re familiar with your skills and experiences.

If you have an interview and think your referee is likely to be contacted, let them know so they can be prepared and ready for a call.

Seek support

If you’ve gone through all the steps and you’re still not feeling confident about your resume, Clint suggests asking for support from a teacher, careers counsellor, pathways officer or someone who works in the industry you’re trying to break into.

Remember, employers aren’t necessarily looking for people with lots of work experience.

“There’s the idea that someone who is new and fresh doesn’t have bad habits,” Clint says. “A lot of employers are looking for enthusiastic young people who they can mould into the type of worker they’d like.”

The Certificate II in Work Education prepares students with work skills for the retail sector. Students learn what it’s like to work in a pop-up shop, complete with cash registers and merchandise.

It tends to be associated with decreased motivation, lowered performance and negative attitudes towards oneself and others. Experiencing burnout can be detrimental to our health and can lead to long-term negative effects. Learning to balance work, study, and other commitments is important in maintaining your mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Here are our top four strategies for reducing stress and avoiding burnout.

Prioritise tasks and manage your time

Focus your time and energy on the most important and urgent tasks first. Prioritising tasks allows us to reduce our tendency to procrastinate, making it easier to achieve our goals. Tools like day planners or task lists can help organise your time so you can set aside dedicated blocks for work, study and leisure. With a clear plan in place, you will feel more confident in your ability to get things done.

Learn to say no

Sometimes, we can take on too many responsibilities out of guilt or fear of saying no. However, this comes at a cost and creates unnecessary stress. It is important that we learn to define our limits and stick to them. It is perfectly okay to say no, especially when you’re already juggling a lot.

"The best part about this job is that it gives people options," Sheetal says. "You can work part-time or evening shifts, depending on the lifestyle you want. Often, our students are mothers who don't want a full-time job or people coming from hospitality, where they have been working long hours."

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook, full-time pharmacy assistants earn around $932 per week. Sheetal says your pay can vary depending on your qualifications and the hours and days you work.

"In some instances, you build up such good rapport with regulars, you even get to know their pet's name," says Sheetal.

"Mysa provides students with that industry experience, which means they are not just getting the fundamentals in the classroom; they also have the opportunity to actually implement these new skills in a professional environment," says Vanesa Drummond, Chisholm Hair and Beauty Education Manager.

We also know how important sustainability is in learning environments and workplaces. So, we partner with Sustainable Salons, an environmental resource recovery service that helps us lower our environmental impact.

So, who is Sustainable Salons?

Sustainable Salons is an Aussie-born profit-for-purpose organisation that rescues resources from landfill and finds repurposing opportunities. Now spanning Australia and New Zealand, Sustainable Salons is creating a new ecosystem that benefits salons, their customers, and the planet.

Since its launch, Sustainable Salons has diverted more than 1.9 million kg of resources and waste from landfill. The profits made from recycled products have also donated over 350,470 meals to OzHarvest and KiwiHarvest.

They manage hair donations to create wigs for people with hair loss. They have also found particularly exciting uses for hair clippings, including soil treatments and hair booms – an organic alternative to the synthetic booms and chemicals used to clean up oil spills.

Sustainable Salons has even been working with experts to convert hair into technology and energy sources.

How we work with Sustainable Salons

Sustainable Salons helps to ensure that as much waste as possible from Mysa Salon and Spas and our classrooms go to the right place. To do this, they provide labelled bins for specific material types.

The contents of the bins are collected every two weeks and taken to a sorting facility where Sustainable Salons' dedicated employees ensure all the waste is sorted correctly.

The materials are then processed and diverted to the appropriate reuse, recycling, or ethical disposal streams.

"Pretty much if it's not landfill-appropriate waste, it is all disposed of into the various Sustainable Salons bins," says Vanessa.

Along with ensuring that up to 96% of our salon waste is either put to good use or disposed of properly, Sustainable Salons helps educate our students on sustainability in the workplace.

Our hairdressing and barbering students also have a sustainability unit built into their course programs. The unit is delivered at the start of their course so the skills can be practised early on.

"The information for the Environmentally Sustainable unit is sourced from Sustainable Salons, too," says Vanessa.

Michael pivoted from retirement to a trade course and a new career in cabinet making

After retiring as a university professor, Michael met his partner and then welcomed a baby to the family. Michael decided he'd better return to work, but he wanted to do something different, and cabinet making seemed interesting. Michael found work at a local joinery business and started his apprenticeship training. Michael is now thriving in his second year of a Certificate III in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology at Chisholm. He attributes much of his success to mentors he admires, including his boss and course teacher.

Carly goes from a certificate accounting course to a job at an award-winning accounting firm

Mum of three, Carly, started her career journey by completing a Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping. This qualification allowed her to move on to a diploma and an advanced diploma in accounting. Then she completed a Bachelor of Accounting and is now a chartered accountant at a boutique Melbourne firm. Carly says her Chisholm courses laid down a great foundation. They allowed her to incorporate the theory with the practical work and gave her confidence when navigating accounting systems.

Stefanos achieved his goal of making a career change and working in allied health

After an extensive career in accounting, Stefanos (Stephen) was looking for a change. When volunteering at a hospital, he was inspired by the allied health professionals he worked with. So, Stephen enrolled in a Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance. While studying, he benefited from the support of his dedicated teachers. Chisholm’s Skills and Jobs Centre also helped Stephen prepare his CV and get ready for interviews. He then secured the role he wanted as part of an allied health team and put his new skills to work.

Basirat prepared for a career that better suited her and her family

After moving to Australia from Russia and then having a child, Basirat decided to change careers to one that suited family life. She enrolled in a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care at Chisholm because it was close to home, flexible, and would give her a new career path. Although Basirat faced challenges with language barriers, she gained confidence and excelled in her training. She was even nominated for the Trainee of the Year Award in the 2024 Chisholm Education Awards. Basirat continues to build on her skills and plans to take on a bachelor's degree next!

Liara faced her challenges head-on and turned her passion into a career in beauty

Liara's career journey started when she completed a Certificate III in Beauty Services during year 12. She then decided to carry on with a Diploma in Beauty Therapy at Chisholm. Liara sometimes had challenges at school due to hearing difficulties. She recognises that those challenges are part of the reason for her love of hands-on tasks and her success in her TAFE beauty therapy course. Hawra has always loved kids, so the idea of working in early childhood education made perfect sense.

The 25-year-old was exploring job opportunities in the sector when she came across the traineeship model.

At first, she wasn’t quite sure how it worked but soon found out that the traineeship would enable her to get paid while she completed her studies in early childhood education.

She jumped at the opportunity.

“I've always been interested in early childhood. I wanted to work with children in general, but I love working with younger children,” she says.

“I was researching jobs in early childhood and I came across the traineeship. I was very interested in working as well as studying.”

Hawra embarked on her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care traineeship through Chisholm.

The program matched Hawra with a traineeship at Kids on Meridian, a centre in Melbourne’s south-east.

Hawra’s manager at the centre, Corrie, says it’s been a joy to see her grow in confidence in the role.

“Hawra has settled in amazingly; she's really, really flourished,” says Corrie.

“She's actually been promoted within the first year of the traineeship.”

Corrie says the early childhood education sector is experiencing plenty of growth at the moment – so demand for trainees is particularly high.

“The sector has changed in that we have much higher demand within early childhood education, lots of different centres are popping up, and there are a lot more children to be cared for.”

Designed to meet this demand, the Victorian early childhood traineeship program is a win-win: it helps centres find more quality candidates, and helps trainees gain an entry-point into the industry.

It’s a perfect time to consider joining the sector as trainee – here’s how the program works.

What is the Early Childhood Educators Traineeship Program?

Like Hawra, if you become a trainee, you’ll be completing your TAFE course and working in a centre as a trainee – getting paid a wage as you do so.

You can complete either your Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care and/or your Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care through the program.

This helps you gain an understanding of education and care theory – and put it into practice on the job straight away.

Corrie says she can notice a big difference in trainees that come through the program.

“The thing that I like most about the quality of educators who come through Chisholm is they have a much better understanding of the industry,” she says.

“Within the trainees, you can see a massive change in terms of their self-confidence, but also their knowledge.

“They're much more invested and they show a deep passion for early childhood education.”

Corrie says many trainees in the program get promoted to room leaders, because they are well-trained and enthusiastic about their work.

How does a traineeship work?

As well as allowing you to earn while you learn, the traineeship model provides several other benefits.

study support and monthly check-ins from project coordinators and mentors

Hawra says she appreciated the chance to learn on the job and put the skills she was learning in the classroom into practice.

She also enjoyed the balance of on-campus and online learning.

“Every fortnight I would go into the Frankston campus at Chisholm to take a class – and then everything else is modules online,” she says.

“It was great having it online and then if I didn't understand I’d go on campus and ask the question.

“I loved all of my teachers; they were very helpful.”

Hawra says she felt really supported throughout the program.

“I had a lot of support through my traineeship. I had Anthea, who was my teacher, we had a coordinator, Kellie, and also Melissa who was my trainee teacher, she was supervising me through the whole process; also Corrie would jump in and always help me.”

As Victoria’s population expands, so does its need for early childhood education services.

We’re experiencing plenty of growth at the moment and the state government’s Early Childhood Tertiary Partnerships program aims to meet this demand by creating more than 11,000 jobs in early childhood education.

It’s a perfect time to join the sector as an educator. If you undertake an early childhood education traineeship, your studies will be free and you will get paid as you learn on the job.

Sonja, one of the Chisholm Regional Coordinators who works with trainees while they’re completing their studies, says it’s a fantastic way to learn the skills you need.

“It's a really, really great option where you can support yourself with an income and complete your studies simultaneously,” she says.

“And you've also got a lot of support while you're doing that.”

Or, if you’re already working in an early childhood education centre, it’s a great time to consider upskilling with your Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, which is also offered for free, so you can increase your skills and earning capacity.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the key benefits you’ll access as an early childhood educator trainee.

Earn while you learn

As Sonja says, a big plus of the trainee program is that it enables you to earn a wage for the work you do in an early childhood education centre while you’re completing your training.

Many trainees love the hands-on nature of the program.

Sarah is an educational leader who mentors trainees at Jindi Woraback, a centre in Melbourne’s west.

Sarah says she sees trainees quickly grow in confidence as they put their skills into practice.

“[Working in a centre] gives the trainees the experience of what it is to work with children and with other educators, it allows them to see on-floor what children's development milestones are like, and also what it means to work in teams.”

Gain a free qualification

At the moment, Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care and the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care are both being offered free of charge through the Free TAFE government initiative. This means, you won’t have pay anything for your studies.

The student amenities cost is also covered within the program, so you won’t be out of pocket.

Receive expert mentorship

The traineeship program is designed to be really supportive. You’ll receive mentorship from your TAFE teachers where you complete your studies, such as Chisholm.

You’ll also be supported by your colleagues at the childcare centre where you do your traineeship.

You’ll have monthly check-ins from the Chisholm Regional Coordinators as well as monthly mentor check-ins.

Belinda, who may be one of your teachers in the program, says she loves to inspire new educators.

“The goal of the traineeship program is to create passionate educators,” she says.

“My role as their teacher is to show them the wonderful things that can happen in early childhood.”

Access extra support

You’ll also receive extra guidance as part of the program.

“Part of my role is to support trainees who need help with job preparation,” says Sonja from Chisholm.

“So that could be CV writing, it could be job interviewing, all the way through to matching trainees with a service that best suits their needs.”

The program also provides various other assistance, such as academic, financial and counselling support, to suit your needs as a trainee.

Progress to further study

After you’ve completed your Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, you’ll have doors open to further study.

Sonja says a common question is, “If I have a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, how can I pathway to a Diploma qualification?”

“Chisholm and all the other TAFEs that we partner with offer the Diploma after the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. Not only could you go on and become a fully qualified educator after you complete your traineeship, but you can also continue to study and upskill to become a lead educator or go into your Bachelor – there are so many opportunities academically.”

Children develop significantly before the age of five – so the people they are supported by in these early years have a vital part to play.

Early childhood educator Josephine helps young children flourish in her role working in an early childhood education centre.

“My favourite part about working in the industry is the children,” she says.

“I just love being with the children and seeing them thrive. It's just fantastic to see them grow and achieve lots of goals.”

The 54-year-old had previously worked in education, mostly with adult learners, but was seeking a new challenge.

She came across the opportunity to undertake an early childhood education traineeship and, through the program, gained work with Jindi Woraback, a centre in Melbourne’s western suburbs.

Josephine completed her traineeship with flying colours – and has even been nominated as a trainee of the year.

Educational leader at Jindi Woraback, Sarah, says she’s taken really well to the job.

“Josephine is probably one of my most excelling trainees,” she says.

“She's just got this motivation to work and to learn and has the ability to take on opportunities and take chances and risks in her learning and also with the children's learning.”

The traineeship program that Josephine completed is now open for you to register your interest.

What is an early childhood education traineeship?

To get to where she is, Josephine took on a traineeship through the Victorian Early Childhood Traineeship Program.

She says one of the key benefits of the program is that it allowed her to earn a wage while she trained.

“I wanted to undertake the traineeship because I could study and work as well,” she says.

“I worked full time here at Jindi Woraback, and then every second Friday, I spent the whole day at TAFE on campus, attending classes there, and every second Wednesday night, two hours doing the training online.”

She says it was a good balance of work mixed with online and in-person study.

Being able to put what she was learning into practice straight away was also really helpful.

“I think it gives the trainees the experience of what it is to work with children and with other educators,” she says.

“It allows them to see on-floor what children's development milestones are like and also what it means to work in teams.”

The qualification you will gain through the program – whether that’s the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care and/or Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care – is currently being offered free through the Victorian Government’s FREE TAFE initiative – so you won’t pay anything for your studies.

What support do you receive in a traineeship?

Josephine says she found the traineeship program really supportive – and received plenty of guidance from her teachers and mentors at TAFE and leaders at her centre, such as Sarah.

“The training was good to get all the support needed,” she says. “It was really good if I had any issues; I’d talk to my trainer about it, and she was really helpful for us – was there for you any time.”

Sarah says her role in the program is to support trainees as they build their skills within the centre.

“I would support Jo by meeting with her at the end of the week to see how her week’s gone in the room,” she says.

“And also give her a resources folder of areas of learning, for things like child development and play spaces and how to incorporate that in her learning, as well as her time in the workforce.”
