The Centre is designed to accelerate Australia’s digital capability and prepare the workforce for the jobs of the future.

"We welcome this landmark announcement by the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments, which recognises the importance of investing in digital capability for Australia’s future. The Digital, AI, and Technology Centre of Excellence builds on Chisholm’s strong foundation in technology and innovation, positioning us to lead in areas that will shape the economy and society for decades to come,” said Chisholm Board Chair Dr Gillian Miles.

“This initiative is not just about Chisholm – it strengthens the broader TAFE sector through collaboration and knowledge sharing, ensuring learners everywhere can access world-class training and opportunities in emerging industries."

The Centre of Excellence, based at Chisholm’s Frankston campus, is pivotal in delivering the Australian Government’s ambition of 1.2 million tech workers by 2030 and cements Victoria’s leadership in technology and artificial intelligence (AI) innovation. It aligns with the Victorian Government’s AI Mission Statement and forms part of a national network of up to 20 TAFE Centres of Excellence.

“We are thrilled to accelerate Australia’s capability in digital, AI and technology. These are critical skills for our community and our economy,” said Chisholm CEO Stephen Varty.

“By working collaboratively with the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments, the TAFE Network, and our industry partners, we can build Australia’s sovereign capability in a future-ready economy.”

The Centre will provide opportunities for Victorians to upskill in critical areas such as AI, big data, and emerging technologies. It will also contribute to a national digital skills TAFE community of practice, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing across the sector. A strong focus will be placed on equitable access for learners from all backgrounds, including women, First Nations peoples and regional communities.

Key features of the Digital, AI, and Technology Centre of Excellence include:

cutting-edge digital simulation labs at Chisholm’s Frankston campus

a national network of industry satellite campuses to accelerate workplace training

expanded higher apprenticeships and traineeships in digital and technology fields

a nationwide mentoring program and career readiness resources for students

applied research partnerships to respond to emerging technology trends.

The Centre of Excellence will begin operations in 2026 from Chisholm’s Frankston campus, recently upgraded with world-class facilities. The first phase will include the launch of simulation labs and establishment of national partnerships.

Chisholm’s nomination in the Innovative Koorie Learner Pathways category recognises the work of its Koorie Liaison team, which has helped hundreds of students feel culturally safe, supported and confident in their learning.

Over the past year, Chisholm has delivered more than 2,000 individual support sessions for Koorie students. The Institute has also launched a dedicated Koorie News newsletter, strengthened ties with local Aboriginal organisations, and worked closely with the Bunurong Land Council to embed culture into campus life.

Nola White, Koorie Student Support Officer and a respected member of the local Aboriginal community, said the team’s approach is grounded in care, culture and connection.

“It’s not just about study support,” Ms White said. “It’s about making sure students feel safe, proud and part of something bigger. When they feel that connection, they thrive.”

The Koorie support team provides holistic care, connecting students with Aboriginal health services like the Aboriginal Medical Service in Frankston, and offering practical support with job readiness and career planning.

“Students know they can come to us for anything — it doesn’t matter how big or small,” Ms White said. “Whether it’s a yarn, a check-in, career advice or just someone to sit with, our door’s always open. We’re here 24/7, 365 days a year. We are always available, always here for our mob.”

Chisholm’s campuses sit on the lands of the Bunurong people, and the Institute works closely with Traditional Custodians to ensure its programs reflect and respect local culture. That includes Welcome to Country and smoking ceremonies at important events, as well as new art displays featuring local First Nations artists.

“We walk alongside our students,” Ms White said. “We listen, we learn, and we make sure their voices shape the way we do things.”

The Koorie Student Support Team also plays an active role in regional committees and community groups, helping shape Chisholm’s Wurreker Plan and ensuring programs remain culturally appropriate and community-driven.

Support goes beyond the classroom. Through the Chisholm Skills and Jobs Centre, students receive tailored career counselling and access to exclusive employment opportunities.

Financial support is also a key focus. In 2025, 43 Koorie students received scholarships through programs like Reconnect and the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation, helping reduce barriers to further study. “The Mornington Peninsula is home to one of Victoria’s fastest-growing First Nations communities,” Ms White said. “We’re proud to be recognised for our work in helping to shape a more inclusive education system — one that honours culture, builds trust and creates real opportunities for Koorie learners,” said Ms White.

Chisholm wins top national award for customer-centric culture

Chisholm CEO Stephen Varty said the award reflects Chisholm's commitment to putting students at the centre of every decision.

“We’ve worked hard to build a culture where every student feels supported, respected and empowered,” Mr Varty said.

The Victorian TAFE provider supports more than 33,700 students, with 42 per cent born overseas and representing 159 countries. Many are the first in their families to pursue post-secondary education, and a significant number come from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Chisholm is ranked the number one TAFE in Australia for quality of educational experience in undergraduate higher education programs, scoring 86.3% — nearly 10 points above the national average.

Nationally, Chisholm is ranked second among TAFEs for phone and email enquiries (ranked by leading customer experience experts, CSBA), and satisfaction with the Student Enrolment Hub is 92.3%.

Mr Varty said the focus on customer experience extends beyond digital and phone interactions.

“Good service isn’t just about answering questions — it’s about how people feel in our spaces.”

That philosophy guided a $67 million redevelopment of Chisholm’s Frankston campus, co-designed with students and community members. The new multi-level facility offers quick access to enrolment and support services in a welcoming, safe and inclusive environment.

Chisholm has also partnered with the Victorian Government to build two new Tech Schools in Frankston and Dandenong, offering hands-on training in science, technology, engineering, arts and maths (STEAM). The Frankston Tech School opened last month.

Mr Varty said the recognition highlights the work of staff across the organisation.

“People know good service when they see it. They feel it in how they’re treated, in the respect they’re shown, and in the care that’s taken to meet their needs,” he said. “This recognition belongs to our passionate people across Chisholm who deliver that experience every day.”

The ASEAs, hosted by the Customer Service Institute of Australia, are Australia’s premier customer service awards program, attracting hundreds of nominations each year. Chisholm was also named a Service Hero in the Customer Service Organisation of the Year (Government / Not-for-Profit).

This is the first of six new Tech Schools completed as part of the Victorian Government’s $116 million Victorian Budget 2023/24 to be opened. The Tech School delivers free, hands-on, high-tech immersive science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning experiences for local students including government and non-government schools.

Acting Premier and Minister for Education Ben Carroll officially opened the $12 million Frankston Tech School, which provides a purpose-built space catering for up to 60 secondary school students at a time, supporting the surrounding local government area.

A collaboration between the Victorian Department of Education and Chisholm, the Frankston Tech School’s facilities and programs were designed in collaboration with local schools, industry and community partners, to ensure students learn how to address real-world challenges facing local industries and communities.

Acting Premier and Minister for Education Ben Carroll said, “Tech Schools are high-tech STEM centres of excellence that provide hands-on and immersive STEM learning experiences to secondary school students, sparking their aspirations to pursue future pathways and careers.”

“Tech Schools help students stay ahead of the game, giving them access to industry-standard technologies and opportunities for STEM learning that have not been available before,” said Mr Carroll.

Frankston Tech School is a valuable addition to the educational services offered on-site at Chisholm, in Melbourne’s south east. Independent assessments have found Tech Schools increase students’ knowledge of career options in science and technology.

Chisholm CEO, Stephen Varty said the opening is a significant milestone in supporting our communities to be job ready.

“By giving local students access to cutting-edge technology and practical experiences, we’re investing in our community and supporting teaching excellence across the region.”

“This facility will help inspire young people to explore STEM careers, creating more opportunities and a brighter future for Frankston and beyond.”

Mr. Paul Edbrooke Member for Frankston said, “Students in Frankston will have the chance to explore future career pathways like never before, in industries that have never been more important.”

Over the last 12 months, Chisholm has delivered a number of initiatives focused on embedding customer-centricity across the organisation and improving overall student satisfaction.

The ASEAs, hosted by Customer Service Institute of Australia, are Australia’s premier customer service awards program, attracting hundreds of nominations each year. The awards recognise best practice, performance and innovation in customer service.

Chisholm CEO, Stephen Varty, said he was very proud of the team for this achievement.

“Putting the customer first is fundamental to our mission of delivering high-quality vocational education that changes lives. We’re thrilled to be recognised at a national level for the quality of service we provide our students and industry and community partners.

“The Australian Service Excellence Awards set the national benchmark for customer service. Being recognised across two separate categories reflects Chisholm's unwavering commitment to educational excellence and exceeding customer expectations,” said Mr Varty.

Chisholm Institute is one of Victoria’s largest vocational training providers, serving more than 30,000 students from more than 150 countries.

Chisholm was nominated alongside other finalists, including leading brands HCF (Health Care Fund), St Vincent's Care Services and A1 Technologies.

This will be the first of the Victorian Government’s 6 new Tech Schools to open across the state.

A collaboration between the Victorian Department of Education and Chisholm, Frankston Tech School will have an internal floor area of nearly 1000 square metres and can cater for up to 60 secondary school students at any time.

It will focus on delivering a hands-on, immersive STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) learning experience for secondary school students in the surrounding local government areas. The facilities and programs were designed in collaboration with local schools, industry and community partners, to ensure students learn how to address real-world challenges facing local industries and communities.

Minister for Education Ben Carroll has said, “Students in Frankston will have the chance to explore future career pathways like never before, in industries that have never been more important.”

Frankston Tech School will be a valuable addition to the educational services offered on-site at Chisholm, in Melbourne’s south east. Independent assessments have found Tech Schools increase students’ knowledge of career options in science and technology.

Mr. Paul Edbrooke MP recently visited the site. “This brilliant, state-of-the-art facility will allow visiting secondary schools to engage in industry-leading technology,” said Mr Edbrooke.

Ben Jenkinson, Associate Director Foundation and School Pathways at Chisholm, said the new Tech School will help prepare secondary students for the jobs of the future.

“At a Tech School, students can learn STEAM skills to take on real-life challenges and design solutions that work towards a smart, sustainable and ethical future, in growing areas like sustainability, entrepreneurship, renewable energy, robotics and automation.

“These modern, hands-on STEAM learning opportunities will be offered alongside a school’s curriculum, to complement and extend students’ connection to the future and high-priority industries forecast for employment growth,” said Jenkinson.

The project initially aimed to employ 150 trainees across Victoria. The team exceeded this target, employing 520 job seekers into traineeships.

This success stemmed from targeted recruitment and comprehensive support structures, including job readiness training, tailored mentoring and financial incentives.

Sue Wyatt, Manager Education Programs in Early Childhood Education and Care at Chisholm, has presented her team’s results at the International Network for Innovative Apprenticeship 2025, in the UK this month. This global platform invites ideas and knowledge sharing, putting Chisholm at the forefront of early childhood education and care initiatives.

‘Chisholm’s project facilitates clear pathways to employment and career advancement in early childhood,’ says Ms Wyatt.

‘We have removed barriers for trainees to get jobs. We helped them get the appropriate clothing for interviews and work. We provided pre-job training. We foster a collaborative community of practice to help shape the future of early childhood education and care.’

Chisholm will continue this work, aiming to increase the number of skilled workers throughout Victoria.

Frankston campus wins Melbourne Design Award

The new landscape has expanded the campus heart, creating a dynamic outdoor hub for socialising, learning and connections. This is the result of Chisholm’s collaboration with the Victorian Government, Arcadia, Gray Puksand and Kane Constructions.

To create a sense of belonging, the team researched the Frankston area, to understand the First Nations and colonial history of the site. They also conducted site assessments for solar access, connections, wind and local species to encourage biodiversity.

The result is a coastal-inspired campus identity that represents Frankston’s precolonial natural landscape, highlighting the proximity to the beach through planting and material palettes.

Locally sourced materials were used in the concrete paving and Spotted Gum hardwood. The Water Sensitive Urban Design includes rain gardens with overflow pits to facilitate stormwater runoff and permeability.

Chisholm CEO, Stephen Varty, says, “Chisholm is proud to provide state-of-the-art facilities for students, educators and visitors.
Chisholm Institute has offered undergraduate and post graduate degrees for a number of years. These include courses that have been developed by Chisholm in its own right, and courses delivered in partnership.

Further opportunities to expand partnership arrangements will be pursued to leverage pathway options for students to begin their higher education journey with Chisholm and continue their studies at a partner University. The College will also explore future opportunities and underpin the possible expansion of current arrangements where jointly badged courses can be delivered via a Chisholm campus or through other delivery models.

Chisholm has established itself as an education leader for Melbourne’s growth corridor through the Casey and Cardinia regions. To meet the demands of a growing post-secondary education sector, the connectivity of TAFE and Higher Education qualifications is a logical, seamless approach to the increased demands for a skilled and qualified workforce.

Chisholm Director and CEO Stephen Varty recently announced the appointment of Dr Andrew Bridges as the inaugural Dean of the Higher Education College.

“The appointment of Dr Bridges highlights the importance of Higher Education to Chisholm and our commitment to expanding our already successful range of programs. Chisholm is positioned extremely well to offer pathways through from vocational study to qualifications at AQF Level 6 and above such as associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees and graduate certificates. These will build on the excellent courses and facilities already available at Chisholm and be geared to meeting workforce need in our communities,” Mr Varty said.

Dr Bridges served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Central Queensland University (CQU) following a number of leadership roles both in Australia and in the UK. Dr Bridges was awarded his PhD from Cardiff University and his last UK appointment was as Associate Dean (International and Development) in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at Coventry University.

Dr Bridges said that he’s looking forward to leading the College as it brings together all of the existing Higher Education provisions into one virtual centre.

“This will allow best practice to be shared and for there to be a consistent approach to Higher Education at Chisholm. It will also allow deep engagement with the other delivery areas in the institute and external stakeholders. Central to the approach will be bi-directional pathways between Vocational and Higher Education,” Dr Bridges said.

The College will pave the way for Higher Education students to have the opportunity to achieve vocational skillsets, while vocational students can choose to continue their studies into an undergraduate or post graduate qualification.

“In this manner, the College will support the vision of Chisholm being a centre for lifelong learning,” Dr Bridges said.

The Higher Education College will pursue a range of opportunities in the coming months, and will engage local business and industry as Chisholm continues its tradition of supporting the needs of employers and businesses throughout South East Melbourne, the Peninsula and regional Victoria in providing job-ready graduates.

Chisholm Expands Training Options in Wonthaggi to Support Local Workforce Development

Chisholm Institute is offering on-campus and online training in the Wonthaggi region to support local workforce development and create career opportunities, particularly in areas where skills are in high demand.

Now, thanks to the Victorian Government, every year, more than 2,000 students in Melbourne’s southeast will be able to train at a new world-class facility close to home.

Minister for Skills and TAFE Gayle Tierney today officially opened a multi-level vocational training facility at Chisholm Institute’s Frankston campus and met with students and teachers who are using the redeveloped space.

The new building will support in-demand Free TAFE courses that respond to growing industry needs, including the Diploma of Community Services, Certificate IV in Mental Health, Certificate IV in Youth Work, and Certificate IV in Cyber Security. The facility opened to students in January 2024 and brought together a range of student services into the new Student Hub, which now offers enrolment support, student services and student counselling, along with Learning Commons and a gallery space.

The Victorian Government invested $67.6 million to build the new facility, which is providing a state-of-the-art learning hub for students to get the skills they need for a rewarding career. The hub includes bespoke spaces for a range of courses, along with dedicated spaces designed to look like industry-specific work environments.

The facility, which is the second stage of a $151.1 million redevelopment of the campus, replaces two of the oldest buildings at the Frankston campus and integrates with the $83.5 million Frankston Learning and Innovation Precinct, which was completed in 2019, and has the capacity to train almost 4,000 students at the one time.

The Precinct has been specifically designed to meet the changing training and education needs of the region, ensuring students have the skills they need to enter the workforce.

The Chisholm Institute redevelopment is one of many projects the Victorian Government is delivering as part of the Building Better TAFE Fund, ensuring students have the best facilities to train in, close to home.

Local Study Options Available with No ATAR Required

With the recent release of the 2024 ATAR scores, there are thousands of Year 12 students throughout Melbourne’s southeast who are thinking about their futures and trying to decide what to do next year.

Conor Mullan, Chief of Education at Chisholm Institute of TAFE, advises students that there are a huge range of study options available for young people who did not get the ATAR they had wanted.

“You should be proud of all that you have achieved this year. Give yourself a break if things didn’t go according to plan and you didn’t receive the ATAR you hoped for. While high schools put a lot of pressure on you to achieve a high ATAR, the reality is that there are many pathways to reach your education, training, job and career goals. It’s important to find the path that works best for you,” Mr Mullan said.

As a southeast local, Chisholm is a fantastic and easily accessible option to consider.

“We offer a broad range of study options from certificates and diplomas to degrees, and you can apply regardless of your ATAR score. You can then choose to continue your studies with Chisholm, or pathway to another TAFE or university as you progress,” Mr Mullan said.

TAFEs offer a wide range of educational opportunities, including both academic and hands-on learning, ensuring that you are job-ready at the end of your course.

Chisholm also delivers more than 40 courses that are on the Victorian Government’s Free TAFE list, which means that for eligible students, your tuition fees are covered. You can view the courses offered at chisholm.edu.au/free-tafe “Financial scholarships may also be available to you via the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation,” Mr Mullan said.

Following her success at the 2024 Victorian Training Awards held on 30 August, Alicia and her family attended the Australian Training Awards Gala in Canberra on Friday 6 December.

Through a traineeship with Bayfit Leisure Centre in Altona, Alicia completed a Certificate III in Aquatics and Community Recreation at Chisholm which formed a part of her Year 12 studies at Mount St Joseph’s Girl’s College in Altona.

In May, Alicia won both the Victorian School-based Trainee of the Year Award and the Victorian People’s Choice Award (in the same category) for her strong work ethic and positive attitude when teaching young children water safety techniques.

“I was really surprised to be nominated but I put in a huge effort with my studies and it’s paid off,” said Alicia of her dual triumph.

While Alicia did not win the overall Award, to be nominated for an Australian Training Awards is a huge achievement, and her Chisholm teachers are extremely proud.

The Certificate III and Traineeship gave her the chance to earn an income as a swim teacher and lifeguard and receive qualifications, all as part of her Year 12 studies.

Laura Feddersen, Diploma of Nursing student at Chisholm Institute of TAFE’s Frankston campus, was chosen from 150 fellow nursing cadets nationwide to win this prestigious award.

Laura was accepted into Ramsay’s cadetship during her Diploma of Nursing and completed placements at its Beleura Private (Rehab) Hospital, Mitcham Private (Perinatal Mental Health) Hospital and Peninsula Private (Acute) Hospital as part of the program.

She was quickly selected for a graduate position at Ramsay’s Peninsula Private Hospital, only a month after completing her cadetship there.

Before starting nursing studies at Chisholm in 2023, Laura had an entirely different career; she worked at Australia Post for 15 years. While she enjoyed her role, she’d always felt a calling to be a nurse.

“As I approached my forties, my interest in work that would help others in my community only grew stronger.”

“This passion inspired my transition into nursing. Going back to school has been a transformative experience, enabling me to connect with a supportive community of peers and mentors who share my commitment to care,” said Laura.

A Free-TAFE course, Chisholm’s Diploma of Nursing enables graduates to apply for their registration as an enrolled nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, in accordance with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

Ramsay’s Undergraduate Cadetship Program is designed to support enrolled and registered nursing and midwifery students as they complete their studies, giving them on-the-job experience and helping them to choose a nursing pathway.

Celebrating wins at the 2024 Welding Excellence Awards

Chisholm Institute of TAFE is proud to have received awards in three categories at the 2024 Welding Excellence Awards, the most prestigious event on the welding industry calendar.

This event hosted by Weld Australia, honours and highlights the exceptional work of local welders, fabricators, and educators who contribute to the industry’s growth.

Chisholm’s Engineering department was named winner of the 2024 Training and Education – Organisation Award for Victoria. Recognised as a leading training provider, the team delivers an array of courses designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career in engineering, fabrication and welding.

Chisholm’s Engineering team trains more than 1,000 students annually, with an impressive 97% retention rate for apprenticeship delivery – catering to a diverse student body from various genders, age groups, and cultural backgrounds, with a particular focus on encouraging women in trades.

Chisholm educator, Rodney Bentvelzen won the 2024 Training and Education – Individual Teacher Award for Victoria. With a distinguished career spanning 30 years, Rodney has significantly contributed to the welding and fabrication industry through his exemplary teaching and industry involvement – from organising welding exams and competitions to integrating new technology into his teaching practice.

Rodney’s impact extends beyond the classroom, playing an active role in the Victorian Engineering Senate Committee and Victorian TAFE Teachers of Mechanical and Fabrication streams to promote collaboration and best practices among training providers.

A Certificate III In Engineering - Mechanical Trade student at Chisholm’s Dandenong Campus, Levi is doing his apprenticeship at A.W. Bell Machinery in Dandenong South, an advanced manufacturer of foundry equipment, such as shell dipping systems, waterblasts, grinders and cut-off saws.

A.W. Bell General Manager, Stephen Murtagh, who attended the awards at Crown with Levi and his workmates, was reportedly more excited about Levi’s win than Levi himself. Stephen had won a similar award in the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Awards 11 years earlier.

The company was also a finalist in the 2024 Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Awards, in the category of ‘Leader in Manufacturing’ for their advancements in robotics and automation – providing foundries all over the world with equipment that focuses on enhancing safety and efficiencies.

Chisholm congratulates Levi for his dedication to his apprenticeship and work, and his curiosity to keep learning.

Gift of Daimler truck drives collaboration in skills training and freight transport research

In a significant collaboration between Chisholm Institute of TAFE, Swinburne University of Technology, and Daimler Truck Asia Pacific, a Cascadia prime mover, valued at an estimated $450,000, has been generously gifted to Chisholm to support the hands-on training of Victoria's next generation of heavy commercial vehicle mechanics.

The prime mover, equipped with the latest technology—including AdBlue and DPF emission systems, ABS stability control, radar, automated emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control—will be based at Chisholm’s Dandenong campus. It offers a cutting-edge platform for students to develop essential skills.

Chisholm CEO, Stephen Varty said he is grateful for this generous gift, that will enable Chisholm to continue to develop graduates who are highly skilled and well-positioned to meet evolving industry needs.

“It is vital that our heavy vehicle mechanic students are trained with the latest technological advancements, ensuring they are equipped for the jobs of the future,” said Mr Varty.

Chisholm offers the Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology as an apprenticeship, which can lead to employment as an automotive motor mechanic or heavy commercial vehicle repair technician.

Swinburne University of Technology’s Pro Vice-Chancellor of Vocational Education, Madelyn Bolch, emphasised the importance of the partnership. “This is a fantastic example of how the combined efforts of TAFEs and industry partners, like Daimler, can address critical skill shortages and contribute to research that will shape the future of transport,” Ms Bolch said.

This donation further boosts the long-term relationship between the university, TAFE sector, and the heavy vehicle manufacturing industry, with significant implications for research, skills training, and industry collaboration. As Swinburne’s heavy vehicle emissions research work is growing, Chisholm has agreed to support Swinburne with access to the Daimler truck for research purposes.

“This partnership is forging new pathways to advance heavy vehicle education and research, supporting both workforce development and research in advanced heavy vehicle technology,” said Dr Hadi Ghaderi, Professor of Logistics and Supply Chain Management at Swinburne Business School

New Board Chair announced for Chisholm Institute

Naomi recently won Nursery and Gardening Industry Victoria’s Horticultural Student of the Year Award at its annual awards night.

Naomi developed a green thumb during lockdown to stave off boredom, teaching herself plant cultivation, soil preparation, propagation and even creating a thriving veggie patch at home.

After finishing high school during lockdown, she enrolled in the tuition fee-free Certificate III in Horticulture at Chisholm Institute of TAFE, determined to get even better results for her home gardening efforts and to find a job doing what she loves.

Influenced by her grandmother, Marion, whose perfumed roses were her passion, Naomi now works with the passionate team at Haars Wholesale Nursery in Somerville, one of Australia’s largest wholesale plant producers, supplying Australian retailers, landscapers, growers and gardeners with quality flowering indoor and outdoor plants.

“We all really enjoy our work and seeing the fruits of our labour, especially as we move into spring,” she said.

Naomi’s advice for people considering studying horticulture is – just do it. “There are so many career opportunities in horticulture – from specialist pruning to propagating, landscaping or lawn keeping, and you might discover you have a real gift,” she said.

Shaun Leeming, Chisholm’s Environment Department Education Manager said Chisholm’s Horticulture course provides a robust education that blends theory with practical, hands-on experience, setting students up for a thriving career.

“Cultivating knowledge, just like plants, takes patience and care. Chisholm’s Horticulture course grows the best of both.

“If you’re interested in exploring a career in horticulture, check out the industry’s many career opportunities at www.chisholm.edu.au/horticulture,” he said.

Chisholm graduate wins School based Trainee of the year at Victoria Training Awards

We are proud to announce that Chisholm Institute of TAFE graduate, Alicia Farr was named the winner of two awards at the 2024 Victorian Training Awards (VTA); while former Chisholm CEO, Virginia Simmons was honoured with a lifetime achievement award.

Alicia won both the School-based Trainee of the Year Award and the People’s Choice Award (in the same category) for taking the plunge into teaching young children water safety techniques.

A lifeguard and swim teacher at Bayfit Leisure Centre in Altona, Alicia is currently studying her VCE Vocational Major, which combines a Certificate III in Aquatics and Community Recreation as part of her traineeship through Leisure Employment Australia, with studying Year 12 at Mount St Joseph’s College in Altona.

The project, "Nice Work If You Can Get It," aims to create gender-equal apprenticeship pathways and employment opportunities by collaborating closely with the local TAFE in the South East, Chisholm Institute, and the Southern Melbourne Manufacturing Association (SEMMA).

Key components of the project include capacity-building programs for educators and industry liaison personnel, development of a gender impact assessment, and the facilitation of industry forums to promote equality in manufacturing.

The outcomes will benefit educators and the local manufacturing workforce, leading to increased completion rates of manufacturing apprenticeships by women and greater gender diversity in manufacturing roles.

"We are grateful to the Victorian Government for recognising the importance of this initiative," said CEO of WHISE Kit McMahon.

"Our partnership with Chisholm Institute and SEMMA is crucial in addressing the often-overlooked issues that perpetuate gender inequality in the manufacturing sector.

This project is seeking to demonstrate what is required to address gender inequity systemically, while delivering locally. We need to understand and identify the barriers to inequity and, then build the capacity of partners to break these down,” said Kit.

Conor Mullan, Chief of Education at Chisholm Institute emphasised the significance of this project.

"This partnership allows us to deeply analyse and address the gender disparities in our apprenticeship pathways. By equipping our educators and industry partners with the necessary tools and knowledge, we are fostering an environment where gender equality can thrive," said Conor.

Perin was competing against 150 nominees at the Award ceremony held on 9 May 2024 at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium.

The 36-year-old mum from Warrandyte was initially knocked back for an apprenticeship not once, not twice but 50 times before she was taken on by Kilsyth’s Craft Built Homes.

Perin said the award was testament to, “persistence, persistence, persistence.”

“I encourage women to have a crack at a trade; what have you got to lose! I’m really excited for the day my son can go to school and tell his mates his mum is officially a chippy!”

Chisholm TAFE teacher, Michael Oldham, said Perin is among the growing number of apprentices who have chosen to take up a trade later in life, as opposed to straight out of high school. He also said Chisholm has many women undertaking traditional trade apprenticeships post-covid, responding to the increased demand for tradies on major projects and with suburban small business.

Apprentice of the Year, Perin Breakell was awarded the State Apprentice of the Year – Developing Leader Award, as well as the Metro Apprentice of the Year – Developing Leader Award.

Perin led a strong Chisholm contingent of award winners; with four students winning seven major awards.

Chisholm student, Matilda Ould won two awards; State Apprentice of the Year, Structural and Finishing Trades, and Metro Apprentice of the Year, Structural & Finishing Trades Awards (Cabinet Making).

Rhys Bell won the Metro Apprentice of the Year, Future Builder Award (Carpentry); and Campbell Robbins was awarded a Certificate of Excellence as a 2nd Year Apprentice (Carpentry).

Chisholm student, Rhys Bell won the Metro Apprentice of the Year, Future Builder Award (Carpentry).

Chisholm Chief of Education, Conor Mullan said these award wins reflect the dedication of our students to their studies and are testament to the quality of our educators, who consistently deliver high standards of training to our students and industry partners.

“We couldn’t be more proud of our students’ success,” said Conor.

The MBA Apprentice of the Year Awards celebrates the outstanding achievements of building and construction apprentices. Nominees must demonstrate excellence in their trade, as well as an exceptional commitment to their apprenticeship and training. These awards reflect Chisholm’s position as a leading vocational and education provider for apprenticeships in Victoria.

Chisholm celebrates two finalists at World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics Awards

Chisholm Institute has two representatives who have been named finalists in the World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics 2024 Awards of Excellence; Raelene Stockton and Leela Subramaniam.

Raelene Stockton has been named as one of three worldwide finalists in the Leadership in Diversity and Inclusion Award Category. As Chisholm’s Manager of Community and Social Services, Raelene been a longstanding advocate for family violence prevention and response.

She has championed the importance of understanding and addressing family violence through specialised education and training. She has also advocated for the incorporation of diverse voices and lived experiences in family violence discourse and education.

Her leadership helped establish the Family Violence Training Hub and she was instrumental in leading Chisholm to design and deliver Australia’s first, accredited gender-equity qualification.

Raelene initiated the Family Violence Community of Practice for trainers, an innovative model that has prompted requests for Chisholm to facilitate similar models across all Victorian TAFEs.

Her initiatives have transformed Chisholm’s approach and contributed to policy and practice changes in the sector. This is demonstrated by government agencies seeking Chisholm's support and expertise in family violence education and gender equity.

Leela Subramaniam has also been named as one of three worldwide finalists in the Outstanding Student Achievement Award Category.

Leela’s journey started with family tragedy that resulted in her withdrawing from her double-degree at university and immersing herself in cooking, as a form of therapy for her grief.

She stepped back into study at Chisholm as part of an apprenticeship and completed a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery. Fast forward to today, and Leela is now the Junior Sous Chef at the Flinders Hotel in Victoria, running the kitchen and managing a team of eight.

Leela credits Chisholm with providing several life-changing opportunities; a nurturing space to learn, free from judgement and the opportunity and support to enter and win state and national cookery competitions. Her education at Chisholm Institute has given her the confidence to dream bigger, and the skills to bring these dreams into fruition amidst adversity.

The award winners will be announced at the 2024 World Congress Awards ceremony in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Chisholm wins Gold at TDA AWARDS!

Chisholm’s Professional Educator College (PEC) won a gold medal in the 2024 TAFE Directors Australia Awards!

The Jobs Victoria Engineering Project, run in partnership with the Victorian Government, provides job seekers with hands-on engineering skills and training from leading industry experts, before placing them in jobs with local manufacturing businesses.

The program is open to people who have faced challenges entering the workforce, including women aged 45 and over, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and people with disability, as well as any manufacturing businesses looking for workers in Victoria.

45-year-old Hong Tran had worked in numerous jobs and industries throughout her career. From being a nail salon owner, bus driver, disability support worker, and most recently a teachers aide, she recognised an opportunity in a new industry.

After signing on with the Jobs Victoria Engineering Project and completing her training, Hong soon secured a role at Kwill Constructions in Bayswater.

"My experience of this project has been amazing. It provided me with a great opportunity to pursue a career I have always been interested in. The mentors and trainers at Chisholm are fantastic, knowledgeable, respectful, unbiased and supportive. I am so grateful for their support and for the opportunity, I thank them for everything they have done for me," Tran said.

Chisholm’s Chief Commercial Officer, Damien Van Eyk, said that the project aims to help bridge the manufacturing skills gap by targeting both jobseekers looking to work in fabrication or mechanical engineering, and businesses with available jobs in the sector.

“Our goal is to place 100 job seekers in local manufacturing roles by January 2024. In just over two months, we have already placed 31 participants in new jobs and are very confident we will meet our target.

“The Jobs Victoria Engineering Project demonstrtes the power of TAFE, Chisholm is connecting job seekers with the training they need and with employers seeking these in demand skills. We are very proud of what has been achieved in such a short time,” Van Eyk said.

Key to the Project’s success has been largely due to the efforts made to reduce barriers to employment.

“These roles involve working with heavy machinery, so safety is always a priority.

“That’s why Chisholm provides free safety gear for participants, everything from helmets, protective clothing, goggles and gloves are provided to ensure job seekers can learn and work in a safe environment.

“Whether it is providing free safety gear, or free access to relevant training from industry experts, we are breaking down barriers for participants amd helping to fill a growing skills gap in our economy,” Van Eyk said.

The Victorian Training Awards recognise excellence in the vocational education and training sector, with the winners to be announced at a gala ceremony on Friday, 18 August. Each winner will receive $5,000 in prize money and will have the honour of representing Victoria at the Australian Training Awards to be held later this year.

Chisholm student Leela Subramaniam has been nominated for Apprentice of the Year. Leela completed Certificate III in Commercial Cookery apprenticeship at Chisholm’s Mornington Peninsula campus. Prior to this Leela was studying a double degree in commerce and law but decided to follow her passion for cookery.

Currently working as a full-time junior sous-chef, Leela has already won numerous awards including; Apprentice of the Year at the 2023 Chisholm Education Awards, as well as Victorian winner and national bronze medallist at the AUS-TAFE Culinary Trophy in 2022. In the future, Leela aspires to open her own fine dining establishment.

Jill Ford, nominated for Teacher/Trainer of the Year, has been delivering the Certificate III in Dental Assisting traineeship at Chisholm’s Frankston campus for the past eight years. Under Jill’s watch, the Dental Assisting program at Chisholm has grown from just four trainees in 2015, to today providing training to more than 120 students annually. In recent years, 92% of students have successfully completed the course.

Much of this success can be attributed to Jill Ford’s commitment to providing innovative training methods for her students, whether it be additional face-to-face classes or introducing online learning for regional students, it’s no surprise that Jill now advises other training areas at Chisholm on how best to develop their programs.

Chisholm Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Varty, said both Leela Subramaniam and Jill Ford exemplified the Chisholm values, and illustrate the high calibre of students and educators at Chisholm.

“I want to congratulate both Leela and Jill. Being named as a finalist for such a prestigious award is an achievement in itself and we are thrilled to see their hard work recognised at a state level.

“Leela Subramaniam’s journey has been incredibly inspirational, and we are so proud to see how she has overcome significant adversity to follow her dreams.

“And Jill Ford epitomises why our educators are able to deliver life-changing training for our students every single day. Jill is not only a great educator but also someone who is always thinking about new and innovative ways to connect with students and to help them overcome the challenges they face,” Varty said.

Chisholm to deliver technical trades training to the Royal Australian Navy

Chisholm Institute has joined forces with Wodonga TAFE, and a consortium of registered training organisations (RTO’s) across Australia, to deliver technical trades training to Australian Defence Force personnel.

Through this ‘earn and learn’ project, recruits can earn an income, while also gaining hands-on engineering skills and training from leading experts in the industry.

This project tackles the manufacturing skills shortage issue head-on, and is supported by the Victorian Government’s recent announcement of over 55,000 fee-free TAFE and vocational education places, including in manufacturing, in 2023.

The Jobs Victoria Engineering Project aims to help bridge the skills gap by targeting both jobseekers looking to work in fabrication or mechanical engineering, and businesses with available jobs in the sector.

Chisholm plays a key role in ensuring successful placement, by carefully matching applicants with potential employers. Once placed, Chisholm provides continued training and career support through dedicated mentoring, and engineering specific training including optional accredited training pathways.

The program is open to people who have faced challenges including women aged 45 and over, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and people with disability, as well as manufacturing businesses looking for workers in Victoria. This inclusive employment approach promotes diversity in the sector and provides career opportunities to those people who would benefit from additional support.

Chisholm Institute’s Chief Commercial Officer, Damien Van Eyk, is thrilled to see the Jobs Victoria Engineering Project launch, particularly at a time when strong growth in the manufacturing industry is resulting in a significant skills gap.

“It’s an exciting time to launch a career in the manufacturing sector. The Jobs Victoria Engineering Project highlights the opportunities for job seekers to build real-world experience in fabrication and mechanical engineering, while also receiving hands-on training and on-going support.”

Mr Van Eyk continued, “At Chisholm, we take our role as an educational facilitator very seriously. Throughout the Project, we’ll provide job seekers and potential employers with ongoing support via workplace buddy systems, professional development initiatives and post-placement assistance, ultimately creating sustainable employment for the long-term.”

“We encourage Victorian jobseekers, or business looking for fabricators and mechanical engineering employees to get involved.”

The Project comes after the success of a similar Chisholm program in 2022, in partnership with peak national body Australian Manufacturing Technology Institute Limited (AMTIL). The pilot training program produced over 30 students ready for work in the manufacturing industry, many gaining full-time work upon completion.

Keri Elliott, 53, from Glen Waverley, participated in the AMTIL pilot commenting, “Women looking for a new pathway or a career change should just give this a go. The engineering and manufacturing industries have changed, and they’ve really opened their arms up to women. There are so many opportunities out there - us women just need to grab them!”

Keri continued, “Before I started, I honestly didn’t think anyone would hire me because of my age and lack of experience, but the employers literally came to us, and I had a job within two days of finishing the course. The job interviews were like ‘speed dating’ which really took the pressure and anxiety out of the process. This made it so much easier for me.”

The Award recognises an institution or institutional association that has demonstrated excellence in teacher professional development.

Chisholm was nominated alongside two other finalists, Kenya Technical Trainers College and the NPTC Group of Colleges, based in Wales.

Chisholm CEO Stephen Varty said that teacher development was integral to student success and the Award was testament to the hard-work and commitment of its staff.

“We’re incredibly proud to receive such a prestigious award and to be recognised alongside other international education leaders on the world-stage.”

Chisholm has developed an Educator Passport which helps teachers to plan, view and track their professional development. Through the App, teachers can seamlessly browse and register for programs based on their capability requirements, identified through completion of a profiling tool.

“It gives our teachers and leaders access to live information on their progress via their phone or laptop. It’s just one example of how we are utilising technology and best practice approaches to help our teachers develop and stay engaged throughout their careers,” Varty said.

Chisholm provides TAFE education and training through the south-east of Melbourne, one of the most diverse communities in Australia with over 170 different cultural backgrounds and approximately 70% of residents speaking a language other than English.

“We provide support to many of the most at-risk student communities, including migrants, Indigenous students, students with a physical or learning disability, and students from a low socio-economic status."

“Thanks to our reputation and best practice approach, our impact goes well beyond Melbourne. We support teacher development through partnerships with education institutes in Asia, South America, and the Middle East."

“By utilising the power of technology, we are sharing our expertise to make a positive impact across the globe, demonstrating the power of TAFE and how it can change lives,” Varty said.

The WFCP is an international network of national and regional associations of colleges, as well as individual colleges. The winners were announced during the WFCP Awards of Excellence Luncheon at the 2023 World Congress in Montréal, Canada.

“Just being nominated for this Award was an incredible achievement and testament to the work of our hard-working and passionate staff. To win was an incredible honour.

We know that student success and teacher success are inextricably linked, which is why we will continue to implement new strategies to ensure that teachers at Chisholm receive the support they need,” Varty said.

Former Chisholm Student Rosie Batty AO Inspires 2023 Graduates

Leading education and training provider Chisholm Institute held its 2023 Graduation Ceremony at Frankston Arts Centre last week, with 128 students taking to the stage to receive their academic awards.
Ms Batty, who was named Australian of the Year in 2015 in recognition for her work as a passionate campaigner against domestic violence, previously undertook a Diploma of Community Welfare at Chisholm’s Frankston campus.

Ms Batty said her experience at Chisholm gave her the foundational knowledge she needed to become a leading voice for victims of family violence, following the tragic death of her son Luke, at the hands of his father in 2014.

“One of the subjects that I studied during my diploma was family violence, and that gave me the theoretical understanding and foundational knowledge to assist me on my journey to raise awareness of family violence, whilst challenging and seeking to change community attitudes.

“My education foundations began at Chisholm, and I have certainly grown and developed enormously since then. Opportunities will become available to you throughout your life as well, and I encourage you to embrace them as they arise.

“I realise that life is a journey, a journey of continuous learning, and I learnt much from the two years I spent at Chisholm,” Ms Batty said.

The 2023 student cohort faced unique challenges as a result of the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and Chisholm’s Chief of Education, Conor Mullan, said that these experiences will hold them in good stead in the years to come.

“Find your passion and have the courage to pursue the job that will fulfill you, and bring you joy. Seek out those who can help and support you along the way, keep your networks strong, and above all, always be true to yourself,” Mullan said.

“It’s important to acknowledge your support networks who have helped you get to this point,” Mullan continued. “On behalf of Chisholm, I would like to offer each of our graduands our most sincere congratulations on everything you have accomplished,” Mullan said.

More Opportunities for Chisholm Students via the Free TAFE Pathways initiative

Leading education and training provider Chisholm Institute welcomes new study opportunities for students, created by the Victorian Government's Free TAFE Pathways program launched this year.

The initiative aims to further enhance learning and career opportunities for students in Victoria, while also tackling the growing skills shortage in key industries like health and childcare.

The Free TAFE Pathways initiative – part of the Victorian Government’s Free TAFE program – allows students to achieve multiple qualifications in a selected pathway for free. The program is available to students who have first completed a course in a designated Free TAFE Pathway (at Chisholm or an alternate provider) and are now looking to undertake a course in the same industry area.

Chisholm Institute Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Varty, has welcomed the announcement and said that the Free TAFE Pathways initiative will be a game-changer for TAFE students in Melbourne’s south-east.

“We are really excited about the Free TAFE Pathways program. By choosing a pathway, students can benefit from increased flexibility when undertaking multiple courses and will be better skilled when transitioning into the workforce and gaining employment.

Mr Varty continued, "The Free TAFE Pathways program highlights the important function of training providers like Chisholm in supporting industries with a shortage of skilled workers. With so many industries to choose from and no ATAR required, learning has never been more cost-effective and accessible for students, and scholarships are available to support eligible students with the cost of materials.

As part of the Free TAFE Pathway program, Chisholm offers courses in the following industry fields:

Community Services

Nursing and Personal Care

Accounting

Allied Heath and Nursing

Building and Construction

Dental

Information Technology

Education Support

Early Childhood

“At Chisholm Institute, we see how TAFE changes lives every day. Our hope is that as many students as possible seize this opportunity to gain the skills they need for a successful career,” Varty said.

A full list of Free TAFE courses are available on our Free TAFE for Priority Courses.
On Tuesday 18 October, Chisholm Institute’s Frankston campus hosted Aligning the Personal with the Professional, a conference focused on incorporating lived experience within the Family Violence sector in the Southern Metropolitan Melbourne region.

The conference sought to implement, apply and provide a space to put into practice, the recent reforms and work in the family violence sector with a view to encouraging organisations and workers to focus on lived experience.

Featuring panel discussions and breakout sessions, 110 conference participants heard from family violence sector professionals many of whom have lived experience of family violence, domestic and sexual abuse.

The Hon. Ros Spence, Minister for Prevention of Family Violence, attended the conference and shared her own remarks with conference delegates.

The conference was hosted and organised by an organising committee comprising Chisholm TAFE, Women’s Health in the South East (WHISE), and the Integrated Family Violence Committees of Bayside Peninsula and Southern Melbourne.

The overarching purpose of the conference was to:

recognise that lived experience of family violence is already in the sector’s workforce

understand that the presence of lived experience of family violence brings richness to the sector's work, and enables the sector to deliver the right services to communities

focus on how lived experience and expertise of family violence can be recognised, integrated and supported to help the sector to retain and grow its workforce

provide opportunities for the Family Violence sector in Southern Metropolitan Melbourne to discuss and consider the challenges to agencies to support lived experience respectfully.

The outcomes of the conference will be used to inform the future work of Chisholm, WHISE’s ‘Promoting Respect and Equity Together’ (Primary Prevention Partnership), and the plans of the Integrated Family Violence Committees of Bayside Peninsula and Southern Melbourne.

Watch the recording of the conference.

Former student inspires as over one hundred graduates in Frankston ceremony

Last week, Frankston Arts Centre hosted more than one hundred students graduating with diplomas, degrees and certificates from Chisholm Institute.

The graduates heard from guest speaker and former student, Fiona McQueen, about her passion for equality in education.

“I’m passionate about everyone not only having access to education, but also having access to knowledge about what’s on offer, and what can be done with that education,” she said.

Fiona, who heads up the Community Relations Department at Frankston Council, attended Chisholm in the 1990s to study Professional Writing and Editing.

She says she has come full circle, having recently been appointed to the Board of the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation (CCEF).

CCEF is an independent charitable trust set up more than a decade ago to help students in financial hardship to receive a vocational educational qualification at Chisholm. CCEF scholarships pay for eligible students’ tuition fees, helping them to achieve their education and career goals.

“The Foundation is really making a difference in the local community.

“The work we do allows us to help a culturally and linguistically diverse group of people who have been facing hardship for various reasons.

“By offering them access to a Chisholm course which they otherwise couldn’t afford, we’re opening doors for them. Education really is the key to a brighter future,” said Ms McQueen.

This year alone, CCEF awarded over 40 scholarships across the Mornington Peninsula region, with a total of 315 scholarships being offered to students this year.

Of the 134 students who will graduate in today’s ceremony, 46 per cent were born overseas, two are indigenous and one student is a CCEF scholarship recipient.

In her speech, Fiona McQueen said that education provides people with choices.

“Education leads to increased choices and opportunities. What you learn inevitably becomes part of the person you are,” she said.

Chisholm welcomed over 38,000 students last year across its 10 locations, in the workplace and with offshore partners. Chisholm prides itself on producing job-ready graduates and initiatives such as the CCEF scholarship program to help students in financial

hardship receive a high quality, vocational educational qualification, at Chisholm Institute.

Recognition for Gippsland trainee

The 20-year-old suffered a serious illness in her final year of school and spent months in hospital, resulting in her leaving school early.

She had moved out of home and taken a job in an abattoir, but Claire was motivated to continue her education and started searching for a traineeship, which would allow her to work and earn money while studying a business course.

Claire is now a trainee at Lee Property Valuers & Advisors in Traralgon, studying a Certificate III in Business (BSB30120) at Chisholm Institute.

Success in her work and studies has seen Claire announced as a finalist in the Trainee of the Year category in 2022 Victorian Training Awards. These awards are hosted by the Department of Education and Training and recognise the outstanding achievements of students in the Victorian TAFE and training sector.

As part of her job, Claire schedules inspections for the valuers and checks over valuation reports before they are submitted to the bank.

“I love that every day is different,” Claire said. “For example, there may be a hiccup with the valuer’s appointment that you have to resolve because the valuer is on the road. I’m also learning so much about how to draft up a report and all the little things that are important to include.”

Claire travels 2.5 hours a day to work, but says the commute is worth it because her traineeship is a chance to gain useful skills and a qualification.

“I would encourage more employers in regional Victoria to employ trainees,” Claire said. “Young people in regional areas would benefit from access to traineeships and employers would benefit in gaining staff who understand how their businesses work.”

The skills Claire has developed in her traineeship have also helped her with setting up her own successful small business.

“When I bought my car, it’s bright red, so I really wanted to make sure it always looked clean,” says Claire. “I started looking into products for my car, then it progressed to cleaning my friends’ and family’s cars. All of a sudden people were recommending other people and it just snowballed thanks to word of mouth.”

Claire decided to name her business Bedazzled Car Detailing, embracing the fact that she was a woman in an often male-dominated space.

“Cars have always been associated with men, but girls can be into cars too, and that’s why I gave it a girly name,” Claire said.

Claire’s advice to other young people who were considering leaving high school early was to consider a traineeship.

“At high school you may have a maths textbook and learn things you’ll never use in the real world, but a business traineeship you literally have a textbook teaching you how businesses should operate and it’s very useful in your work,” she said.

Early Childhood students can study closer to home

From 2023, aspiring early childhood educators will have the opportunity to study closer to home, completing their university degree at Chisholm’s Frankston campus.

Graduates of Chisholm’s Diploma of Early Childhood and Care will be able to further their studies through Federation University’s Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education), all through flexible study at Frankston.

This allows Diploma qualified students to work in the local early childhood sector, helping to address workforce shortages in the region while they upgrade their qualifications.

The partnership builds on the Federation University and Chisholm Institute pathway agreement which allows students completing specified courses at Chisholm to apply for credits in degrees at Federation University.

Students wishing to enrol in the Degree program can apply for the Victorian Government’s Scholarship funding for Early Childhood Education.

Quotes attributable to Federation University Berwick Head of Campus, Kathy Racunica

“Federation has a key role to play in the prosperity of our communities and as Melbourne's south-east corridor continues to grow, we’re teaming up with local workplaces to address workforce shortages.”

“We know how critical the early childhood sector is. Through flexible learning arrangements, this initiative will support students to maintain ties to their local community and continue to work in the sector as they study.”

Quotes attributable to Chisholm Institute Dean, Higher Education College, Ben Allitt (PhD)

“Chisholm Institute is proud to be working in collaboration with Federation University to deliver the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education through a pathway model.”

“This model allows for flexible learning arrangements for students to work and study in Melbourne’s South East in the high demand, and growing area of Early Childhood Education.”

“We look forward to students being able to progress in their careers and become future leaders in the sector through this cost-effective model of education in collaboration between Chisholm and Federation University.”

Donation to help students in financial hardship

The Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation has received a generous $20,000 donation from the Peninsula Kingswood Community Foundation (PKCF).

Farrah Buckland, Executive Officer of the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation (CCEF), said this donation will improve the lives of many Chisholm students across the south-east who may otherwise not have the funds to access education.

“We are delighted to be partnering with PKCF to help marginalised students achieve their education and career goals,” said Ms Buckland.
The CCEF is an independent charitable trust that supports students studying a course at Chisholm Institute, who due to financial hardship, might not have access to vocational education and training.

Scholarships help pay for eligible students’ tuition fees, and are granted thanks to the generous donations of individuals, businesses, community groups, philanthropic grants and foundations, like PKCF. All funds raised flow through to scholarships, as Chisholm Institute covers all administrative costs involved in running the Foundation.

Glenn Fernandez, Chair of PKCF, said the foundation is excited that the CCEF scholarship program complements and connects with other community programs it supports.

“When we considered CCEF we noted that more than 60 per cent of its scholarships are granted to women to acquire skills and education,” said Mr Fernandez.

“We know that this donation and formed partnership can lead to positive long term economic outcomes and change the trajectory of lives, away from inter-generational poverty and disadvantage for individuals.”

Many CCEF scholarships have been awarded to students in the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula region due to the underlying need for access to education.

To cater for the growing education demand in the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula region, amenities at Chisholm Institute (Frankston campus) are currently in the second phase of revitalisation.

The new and improved Chisholm Frankston campus will provide students with world class facilities and education options including Free TAFE courses, higher education pathways, the Adult Migrant Education Program and scholarships through the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation.

“I applied for the scholarship as money has always been a struggle in my lifetime. I thought by applying it would give me a chance to study an amazing course without the anxiety and fear of not being able to pay for my fees,” said Jorjah.

“This course has changed my life by giving me the support and confidence to work towards something that I have always been passionate about.

“It has given me confidence in my academic integrity and gives me a sense of purpose in my life to help others,” she added.

Jorjah’s goal is to provide a stable upbringing for her son and complete another degree in psychology to become a psychologist specialising in mental health, alcohol and other drugs.

The Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation is an independent charitable trust, which supports current and future students of Chisholm TAFE who due to financial hardship, might otherwise not have access to vocational education and training.

Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation scholarships support students that are studying a course at Chisholm, and each year worthy recipients from the Mornington Peninsula are granted scholarships, thanks to the generous donations of individuals and businesses.

“I cannot thank you enough for giving me this amazing opportunity to allow me to study without the fear, anxiety and restriction of not being able to afford the fees of the course,” said Jorjah.

A new student version of Infoxchange’s nation-wide web-based case management system called Specialist Homelessness Information Platform (SHIP), has been specially developed for use by Chisholm students.

SHIP is well known across the Community and Social Services industry, and used by professionals to record client information, case notes and case plans and report on the current state of homelessness across the country.

Raelene Stockton, Manager Community and Social Services at Chisholm, said the TAFE is constantly looking at ways to evolve its practical courses and provide industry-relevant learning experiences, especially in the Community and Socials Services space.

“This partnership with Infoxchange has provided our students with another way to connect with what goes on in the industry and better understand the challenges faced with vulnerable communities and create social inclusion,” explained Ms Stockton.

Initially, Infoxchange’s SHIP will be incorporated into a homeless unit within Mental Health and Youth Work courses at the Berwick and Frankston Chisholm campuses, and then it will be rolled out to all other Community and Social Services course areas at the TAFE.

Students will be provided with a certificate of completion once they finish the training, which they can add to their resume.

Mr David Spriggs, CEO of Infoxchange said it is critical that the next generation of people moving into the social justice sector gain experience with the latest technology used in the industry.

“This is the first education partnership we have established for our case management system and we are keen to work more closely with Chisholm and the TAFE sector more broadly to expand on this initiative in the future,” said Mr Spriggs.

Chisholm recognises the excellence and achievements of its students and staff

The Awards recognises the efforts of students and staff across the Institute’s diverse portfolio of courses and programs.

Gayle Tierney, Minister for Training and Skills and Higher Education, and Gabrielle Williams MP, Member for Dandenong.

Five buildings, erected in the 1980s, at the Dandenong campus have been revitalised to create a $6.235 million Trade Centre, to provide contemporary plumbing, carpentry and electrical training areas, which will simulate scenarios that Chisholm trade students face in the workforce.

While the $1,169,739 Student Support Hub offers Chisholm students a new lounge area, amenities for disabled students, plus an Indigenous engagement unit to help Koorie students access the services they need.

The Student Support Hub will also be used by Chisholm in its work to help prevent family violence.

Chisholm Institute CEO, Stephen Varty, said he was delighted to welcome Minister Tierney and Gabrielle Williams MP to Chisholm to officially open the new Dandenong Trade Centre and Student Support Hub.

“At Chisholm, our aim is to deliver quality, practical education to ensure our students are job ready when they graduate. These new industry-aligned facilities will help inspire student success and enhance the learning and support experience of our students now and into the future,” said Mr Varty.

“As Chisholm is conveniently located in Melbourne’s south-east, the manufacturing heartland and key residential growth corridor of Victoria, we hope these new contemporary learning spaces will attract and motivate aspiring tradies to chase their calling at Chisholm.”

Chisholm Institute has seen a 10 per cent rise in trade students over the past three years, with plumbing and engineering among the most popular courses. The number of female trade students has risen by 7 per cent year on year.

Minister Tierney echoed the sentiments of Mr Varty.

“We’re giving more Victorians more opportunities – while supporting industry and the economy – which is why we’re continuing to back the TAFE and training sector through projects like the new Dandenong Trade Centre,” said Minister Tierney.

While Gabrielle Williams MP, said “it’s no use training Victoria’s future workforce in a relic of the past. That’s why we have delivered the new Dandenong Trade Centre, which will give local students the tools they need on the pathway to a great career.”

Construction of these industry-aligned facilities commenced in February 2021 and were completed in June 2021.

Accelerating women into automotive apprenticeships at Chisholm in Dandenong

A recent study by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency has revealed that women remain underrepresented in the Australian automotive industry, constituting approximately 20 percent of the sector’s workforce.

To help close this gender gap, Chisholm Institute has partnered with the Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce (VACC) to deliver a new four-week program to help expose women to different career pathways across the automotive sector, in an effort to increase participation.

The accredited training for this innovative program will be delivered at Chisholm Institute’s Dandenong campus on an ongoing basis.

David Adams, Manager of Automotive at Chisholm Institute, said this program aims to remove barriers faced by women who are seeking a career start in the traditionally male-dominated automotive industry.

“There is a huge demand for skilled workers across the automotive industry, and we hope this program will attract interest from women who may have always considered an automotive career but weren't sure what area they’re most interested in or where to start,” said Mr Adams.

“To expose students to a range of careers across the sector, industry placements will take place throughout the program at several businesses that specialise in different automotive areas, in addition to hands-on training at Chisholm Institute.

“We hope this course will empower students to make an informed decision around whether they will continue to pursue a career within the automotive industry,” Mr Adams added.

This new program is an initiative of the Victorian Department of Education and Training and is sponsored by the Apprenticeship Innovation Fund, which supports innovative projects that encourage more women into apprenticeships.

Stephen Wrathall, Program Manager at the VACC, said we hope that the businesses we’ve partnered with for placements will be able to offer apprenticeships to students at the end of the program.

“If a Chisholm student transitions into an apprenticeship, VACC facilitators will provide ongoing support to help jump start their career,” said Mr Wrathall.

“Geelong Accident Repair, City Jeep and Ferntree Gully Hyundai are just some of our industry partners across the state that we collaborate with for student placements.”

Students who complete this four-week program will walk away with TAFE training, including an industry placement, valuable skills in maintaining their vehicle, and new industry contacts.

To register for the program, or for more information, please contact the VACC Skills Development Centre on 03 9829 1130 or via email at AWIA@vacc.com.au

Breaking ground on a new era at Chisholm Institute Frankston

Today, Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney were joined by Chisholm Institute Board Chair Stephen Marks, CEO Stephen Varty and local officials to break ground at Chisholm Institute Frankston to celebrate a significant milestone in the commencement of the Stage 2 multimillion-dollar redevelopment of the Frankston campus.

The new $67.6 million multi-level learning facility will replace buildings C and E on the eastern end of the campus and deliver 9,600 square metres of contemporary learning space. Dedicated Community Services areas have been designed to replicate industry-specific work environments and bespoke spaces will be provided for Art and Design courses and VCE/VCE Vocational Major and Foundation College courses.

The precinct will also bring student support services together in a new Student Hub, along with gallery space for art students and onsite food and retail outlets. New outdoor spaces for recreation will be created on campus as well as connections to the nearby Peninsula Aquatic and Recreation Centre and Frankston Station.

Chisholm Institute CEO Stephen Varty states, “This second stage of development takes us one step closer to delivering on Chisholm’s ambition to transform lives through relevant and responsive high quality education.”

The new facility will support Chisholm Frankston’s huge enrolment growth of more than 13 per cent in the last year and give more than 2,000 extra students each year the opportunity to access courses that respond to local industry needs such as Community Services, Mental Health, Youth Work and Cyber Security.

Stage 2 of the project has been designed to complement the facilities delivered with the opening of Stage 1 in 2019. Buildings A & B now house state-of the-art facilities for allied health, early childhood education, hair and beauty, plumbing, construction and electrical courses, with replica hospital wards and trade sites to give students the experience they need to leave TAFE job-ready.

Construction on stage 2 is due for completion next year and will create 132 new jobs, including 25 apprenticeships and at least 30 new teaching positions over the next decade, increasing opportunities in education, employment and skills for the Frankston region and Melbourne’s south east corridor.

Chisholm's Director of Campus Services, Infrastructure and IT, Richard Pratten, said Stage Two would further enhance the overall campus experience for all students and staff.

“We have been planning an increase in vocational educational opportunities for the residents of the region for several years, and the commencement of this second stage of development takes us one step closer to delivering on that vision. The Frankston campus masterplan was designed to be delivered in three stages. This second stage builds on the work completed in Stage One and will provide exceptional learning facilities for the students of today and tomorrow across a broad range of courses”

Chisholm Institute is one of Victoria’s premier public vocational education and training providers, that provides quality education and training that leads to real career outcomes.
