Do you or someone you care about need a nurturing environment to improve numeracy and literacy skills? Maybe the goal is to prepare for the workplace or further study. Or even gain confidence and learn general life skills.

Wherever you are on your education journey and whatever your goals, Chisholm offers foundation courses to help you work towards them.

Here, we take a closer look at TAFE foundation courses that can help you transition into further studies and the workforce.

General Education for Adults

Our General Education for Adults courses are for young people aged 16+ and adults who want to build confidence in essential skills for everyday life, work, or further study.

We offer Certificates I, II, and III in General Education for Adults. Our students come from all walks of life – from young people straight from school who want to boost their education to adults looking to upskill.

"These courses are for anyone who would like to brush up or enhance their learning of literacy or numeracy," says Chisholm Education Manager of General Education and Work Education, Silvia Koslow. "They may have gaps in their education, or they've gone to apply for a course, but they're lacking in specific skill sets.”

Silvia says that she has seen many of her students achieve great things and successfully transition to VCE or VCE VM, further study, or employment.

The benefits of General Education courses

  • Pathway options including apprenticeships, further study, or employment.
  • Self-directed learning that focuses on the student's goals.
  • Ability to enrol at any time during the year.
  • Flexible adult learning environment.
  • Small class sizes with teachers providing individualised support.
  • Ability to fast-track your studies so you can reach your goals sooner.

How it works

  1. After enrolment, we'll get in touch to arrange an interview and an assessment in maths, writing, and comprehension to understand where you are and what your goals are.
  2. We’ll advise you which General Education for Adults course would be right for you and the steps to take to reach your learning goals.
  3. Your teachers will tailor the learning to your needs and work with you on a one-to-one basis to help you achieve your goals.

Chisholm proved to be the right setting for Heidi as she thrived in the smaller class sizes and personal face-to-face learning.

"I like the one-on-one a lot more through TAFE because I understand a lot better. I had the best teacher I've ever had throughout my whole school life – primary school, secondary school, everything. She was so supportive."

Work Education courses

Our Work Education courses support students with cognitive impairment, offering a safe and engaging environment for building life, work and independence skills.

Popular courses include:

Certificate I in Transition Education

In Certificate I in Transition Education, students learn life skills to prepare them for the real world. For example, they may be asked to take part in a supported treasure hunt around Melbourne’s CBD, use maps and navigate the public transport system.

Certificate I in Work Education

The Certificate I in Work Education is focused on getting students into work. Students do practical placement and vocational tasters within trade areas.

“They may learn about food handling, coffee making, responsible service of alcohol and customer service skills,” says Silvia. “Within the classroom, they also learn skills around getting a job, like resume writing.”

Certificate II in Work Education

The Certificate II in Work Education prepares students with work skills for the retail sector. Students learn what it’s like to work in a pop-up shop, complete with cash registers and merchandise.

Upon completion, students can register with a disability employment agency to secure further work.

The benefits of Work Education courses:

  • Ability to learn life skills, confidence and independence.
  • Learn in a supportive environment (support officers work alongside teachers in the classroom, and NDIS workers are welcome to come along to class).
  • Opportunity to make friends and feel connected.
  • Hands-on work placements and opportunities to explore different vocational pathways.

Over the years, Tom has completed several Work Education qualifications and considers himself a lifelong learner.

"The teachers have been very supportive. If there’s something I’m not quite getting, they will explain it again and teach it a different way."
