Funding available to study English as an additional language, VCAL (Foundation), General Education for Adults and Work Education courses

The Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program can help you improve your employability skills and prepare you for further study or employment.

The SEE program provides funding for up to 800 hours of training for selected courses within Chisholm Institute, Narre Community Learning Centre or Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre. 

At Chisholm, the SEE program can fund study in English as an Additional Language (EAL), General Education for Adults (CGEA), VCAL (Foundation), and Work Education Certificates.  These courses will help to provide you with the relevant communication and employability skills to help you find a job or undertake further study. 

SEE is an Australian Government program funded by the Department of Education and Training.  Visit the SEE website. 

Quick facts about SEE:

  • it’s free and provides up to 800 hours training in a course to suit your needs
  • flexible entry- join the course at any time in the year
  • you need to be a registered jobseeker aged between 15 and 64 years
  • you need to be referred to SEE by your Centrelink, jobactive, Disability Employment Services (DES), or Community Development Program (CDP) provider
  • you attend an interview to discuss your learning and employment goals, assess your skills and needs, and guide you to the most suitable course to achieve your aims
  • you can begin at your own level and learn at your own pace
  • you can still look for work or care for your family
  • you attend full or part time study , as negotiated with your employment service provider (full time is 20 - 25 hours per week, and part time  is 10 - 20 hours per week) 
  • SEE is an approved Work for the Dole activity.

Some of the topics you may cover include:

  • grammar, spelling
  • writing skills -sentences, paragraphs, essays, cover letters and reports
  • reading skills – main ideas, interpreting, research skills for study
  • using the internet, emails, word processing and presentation skills
  • speaking and listening skills for everyday, further study and employment needs
  • job seeking and interview skills.

The courses offered at different locations may vary.

Eligibility for SEE

You must:

  • be between 15 and 64 years old
  • be registered as a job seeker with Centrelink, jobactive, Disability Employment Services, or the Community Development program
  • not be a full time student, or be doing the AMEP program.

The Chisholm SEE program is available at:

  • Berwick  (25 Kangan Drive) 
  • Cranbourne  (New Holland Drive)
  • Dandenong  (121 Stud Road)
  • Frankston   (Fletcher Road)

SEE program is also available at:  

  • Narre Community Learning Centre  (1 Malcolm Court, Narre Warren)
  • Merinda Park Learning and Community Centre (currently located at 7-9 Bakewell Street, Cranbourne.  In 2017, it will be located at 141-145 Endeavour Drive, Cranbourne North).

Course days and hours

Classes run Monday to Friday,  9am - 2.30pm.

Evening classes will be available at our Dandenong campus from February 2017.

More information about eligibility for SEE Funding

To check if you are eligible for SEE contact your jobactive, DES, or Centrelink. Generally to be eligible you must be:

  • working age (15-64 years) and looking for full time work (dependant on individual Mutual Obligation Requirements which as assessed on a case by case basis), and
  • registered as an active job seeker, and eligible for jobactive, Disability Employment Services (DES) or Community Development Program (CDP) assistance, and
  • deemed suitable for training, without barriers that would prevent successful participation, and
  • either an Australian citizen or permanent resident or have working rights in Australia, and be on one of the following payments:
    • Youth Allowance
    • Newstart Allowance
    • Disability Support Pension
    • Widow B Pension
    • Widow Allowance
    • Partner Allowance
    • Parenting Payment (single or partnered)
    • Special Benefit

You may also be eligible for the SEE program if you are:

  • aged between 15 and 21 years, even if you don't receive an income support payment,
  • a migrant serving the two year Newly Arrived Residents Waiting Period (NARWP) for income support (if you are a customer who is self-serving the waiting period you are not eligible).
