Raphael has always had a naturally curious mind. He enjoys tinkering to see how things connect and work together. With a background in technical service work, Raphael knew that hands-on learning in a field that would pique his interest would be a perfect fit. So, when a friend recommended an automotive apprenticeship, Raphael enthusiastically took the advice.

Starting his Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology as a mature-age student, Raphael approached every lesson with enthusiasm. If concepts didn’t immediately click, he took responsibility for his learning and continued exploring them independently. For instance, after learning the basics of differential repairs, Raphael went home, pulled apart the differential in his own Ford AU Fairlane, and successfully rebuilt it. Working on his own car helped him to understand the process better.

At times, Raphael considered giving up on his studies but after a short break and the support of his teachers, he returned with renewed motivation. With renewed vigour, Raphael embraced the balance of full-time work and study, showing resilience and a commitment to his future.

“My teachers have instilled a confidence in me and grounded me as a person ... to really show me I can do this”, Raphael explains.

His professional growth has been swift. Raphael’s leadership and technical skills were quickly recognised when, after only a short period of time, he was promoted to Foreman and Workshop Manager at Westernport Ford. He also loves to help fellow apprentices while working.

With great care for his community, Raphael provides free maintenance checks and advice, ensuring drivers maintain safe and reliable vehicles.

Eager to keep learning, Raphael plans to study air conditioning and complete a truck and heavy vehicle apprenticeship. In the future, Raphael would like to become a trades teacher at Chisholm.

In 2025, Raphael was recognised at the Apprenticeship Graduation Ceremony, and this year is a finalist in the 2026 Chisholm Education Awards – Apprentice of the Year category.
