Ryan Jillings is proof that not all heroes wear capes. Some heroes wrap their capes around others.
As a new apprentice and student in the Certificate III in Barbering, Ryan was the quiet one in class, sometimes easily distracted. But with a drive to succeed, he sought out his teachers and mentors, asking for advice on how he could improve his skills. With their support, he learned to sharpen his focus, allowing his creative flair to soar so high he won second place in Chisholm’s Barber Bash competition.
With a victory under his belt, Ryan set his sights higher. To improve his craft, he took it upon himself to complete extra assessments, sourcing his own models and seeking feedback from his teachers.
Ryan has become an indispensable asset at his workplace, working full-time at New York Barbers in Berwick. His employer was so impressed by his positive attitude to learning that Ryan was given the Most Improved Staff Member Award. That accolade secured him a promotion.
As someone who looks to help others, Ryan pays it forward by mentoring other apprentices and work-experience students. Beyond his skills in leadership and teamwork, Ryan demonstrates empathy and understanding beyond his years. In 2025, Ryan used his clippers for a cause, captaining his workplace team in the Love U Bro fundraiser.
Whether he is helping the community or providing haircuts for customers, Ryan remains grounded by his values.
“I don’t just want to help me; I want to help others as well”, he says.
As he prepares for the upcoming Barber Battle competition, Ryan’s 2026 Apprentice of the Year win is just another chapter in this hero’s adventure.
